yes I agree with you on this one.
one is what you are and the other is what you choose to believe in.
to be simple, if you painted your front room green, it would be more acceptable to say that I didn't like it, however it would be prejudice to dislike YOU because you have green eyes.

you don't like the green color on the wall, it makes no sense not to like the person because they have a green wall.

it just really hurts me when people i get along great with tell me they dislike christians. since i am a christian, even though a lousy one, it still hurts. it's not like i dislike people who aren't. that wouldn't be fair.

when a person chooses to do something in their life, (ie. paint their wall green?), then they are subject to fair judgement. this is life. your choices and actions in life demonstrate who you are. your skin colour, place of birth, mother's maiden name, etc etc... do NOT because you had no control over them.

you're misunderstanding samhain's above post..... listen closer- the post isn't about hating people with green walls for heaven's sake, it's about being able to judge a person based on their personal choices.

now, i of course disagree that it's at all rational to hate christians as a whole, but one is absolutely able to judge them on the basis of what they've chosen to believe in, and thus the way they conduct their lives. hate is an inappropriate choice of word here anyhow; i'm thinking more along the lines of fair judgement.

by the way, i do not 'hate' all christians, nor can i say they bother me. i disagree with their beliefs though, and therefore i see them in a certain, maybe reduced, light..

but basically, what you're saying is that it's okay to dislike an entire group based on one single characteristic of the group. hating people of a different skin color is not just about hating their skin color, it's about all the assumptions you have made about the people of that skin color. the same goes for people who have decided to believe in christ. that's one factor. you have an entire file cabinet in your head based on your assumptions about their personality, behavior and lives based on taht one factor. physical or mental, disliking someone based on assumptions derived from one factor of their life is erroneous. now, if this person tied you up and painted all your walls that obnoxious green color, feel free to have them arrested, they're assholes anyway.

Yeah, I'm sure there were decent Nazis as well, but I don't have to like them.
There are a couple people that I know that are kind, friendly, and love their families, but are intensly rascists.

sometimes one factor overwhelms everything else.

ah, the same old response, throw it back to hitler and the nazis. you know, instead of judging people by their professed opinions, why don't you focus on their actions. people who are mean and power monger are that way because they're mean and power mongers. that's something that is a problem in EVERY belief, or stance. i disagree with a lot of shit hippies believe in, but i'm not bothered by them, in fact share a lot of other things with them. however, if someone fire-bombs my SUV, i'm going to be very angry with them. but i'm not going to be "bothered" by every environmentalist just because the extremists are willing to vandalize my personal property .

"but basically, what you're saying is that it's okay to dislike an entire group based on one single characteristic of the group."

no; we're talking about the group called christians, thus, there is only one characteristic of the group: belief in christianity.

"hating people of a different skin color is not just about hating their skin color, it's about all the assumptions you have made about the people of that skin color."

of course, and as already stated, the skin colour judgement is inappropriate and unfair, because, as you say, assumptions are being made. in the case of christianity, no assumptions are needed because clear mental choices have been made and acknowleged by the people.

"the same goes for people who have decided to believe in christ. that's one factor. you have an entire file cabinet in your head based on your assumptions about their personality, behavior and lives based on taht one factor."

you're absolutely right. and that's the one factor, belief in christianity, that we're discussing allowable relevant judgement on. i see what you're saying, .... i agree, and as i said before, it is illogical to "hate" a vast group of people based on their religious convictions, but it is logical to infer things about their moral beliefs and the way they conduct their lives.

i can observe a group of fifty christian people and, in knowing that they are professed christians, assume certain things about them, that is, the details of their faith colour their lives. however, bob and tom may differ in other ways, and i may enjoy the company of bob much more because he has a better sense of humour and listens to good music, etc. i'm not discussing hate, i'm discussing well-grounded judgment.

lol.. i was telling my husband the geen wall analogy, and he's like "what do green walls have to do with anything?"

though i still hold that your argument is nonsensical and ignores what bigotry truly entails. coming from an intensely bigotted family, i refuse to let it stand anywhere i see it.

Except that in case of this and every other religion, fanaticism is a requirement not an exception.

true, but by not beliving what they do you're basicly saying they're wrong and them to you as well. I just mean that their intentions are basicly good when they say these things so it shouldn't really be taken in a bad way. As annoying as it is they only mean good.
