As a lily white american who really enjoys cuisines from all around the world, all i can say is yesss so true. I didnt like spicy food until recently, only in the last 3 or so years when i really learned how to cook with hot peppers. Heat should be a complement, not the final deciding factor to a meal

Also, to stay on topic - as far as cultural appropriation, the thing i have really learned in cooking meals frrom all over the world is the basic ingredients are essentialy the same. The only thing that really changes is the seasoning.

That's true, but I came to find sometimes being able to tolerate hotter spices helps bring out more of the actual flavor. It's kind of like eggplant and veal. The flavors of eggplant and veal are very subtle, but if cooked just right have a really amazing flavor. If cooked wrong they're just bland. Spicy food is still the same premise but triggered a little differently. The flavors are hidden, but if cooked just right in combination with the right peppers different flavors come out. I'm no expert, my wife is the real cook, but I definitely discovered a whole new world of flavor once I got used to spicier foods. To be honest it was eat or starve so that tolerance to spicy food wasn't deliberate, it was a matter of survival :) But I agree, I don't like spicy food simply because it burns, I like it because the peppers bring out flavor. I'm more inclined to enjoy sauces that have a buttery base and not so much vinegar,

I recently hit a new wall I don't think I'll overcome. Ghost peppers. Holy smokes my esophagus burned for days. The night started with a challenge to drink Ghost Pepper beer. Never in my life would I have imagined beer could burn going down. That was tough. Then one of my coworkers started challenging me to eat a ghost pepper wing. He had a big plate, was eating them like butter so not to be outdone grabbed one, chewed real quick, and swallowed it down. Luckily for me the pain doesn't start right away. You get a good 15 seconds before experiencing spontaneous combustion. I could barely breathe, tears flowed and my nose ran like a faucet. The pain was intense. There was no flavor....just pan and suffering. Agony and misery. I was unprepared for the feeling of spears piercing my brain. I looked it up...second hottest pepper in the world only trailing behind scorpion peppers. Well, at least I can say I tried it. Won't do that agin. Nope, nope, nope!

I could see using something like Ghost Pepper Beer to make Beer Brats (boil bratworst, in beer butter and onions for 20 minutes before grilling them) it might add some nice spice to the brats without being overpowering.

There’s an urban legend which tells of a man with dreadlocks leaving a barber shop prematurely after the barber ran screaming from his establishment
after he discovered a nest of spiders and maggots eating into the guys scalp

True, but we're still talking dreads here, you could hide anything in there (or anything could hide in there) which is why the TSA at airports pay particular attention to deadheads

I know. Last time I flew I was checked 3 times before I left SF. That Urban Legend is based on the assumption that people with Dreads don't wash their hair or pay attention to what is going on with their hair. If you wash your hair and scalp anything that would be living in there would be dead soon. If there were spiders and maggots in there the spiders would be eating the maggots.

As someone with dreads I can attest that indeed the hair gets washed. It just doesn't get combed. If unwashed hair won't dread.

My thoughts, on this the woman in question obviously cannot get past her culture taking on DREADS but I ask and answer this, "where did these people get into the style"? I have seen similar excursions into dumbassville by numerous cultural entities so I appreciate finding out so much before I come down the road to have my head dreaded after 5 years of no cuts or trims. I have naturally curly hair if I leave it alone and don't even comb it it looks like a natural afro not tight black it is just really different now from when I had to comb it every day for school. I have the style that I will be aiming for when I do so I know what I need to do in advance and the care with high maintenance going hand in hand. I live in Eugene, Oregon where dreads are commonplace, went to a party where the whole place was filled to the rafters with dreaded white men.

Yeah, The white guy in the video Corey Goldstein has a follow-up video in which he states that dreadlocks have been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians wore dreadlocks, The Celts, Vikings, Germanic tribes, and the Israelite's.

There’s even some evidence to suggest many early Christians wore dreadlocks to emulate Christ.

You never see Christ depicted wearing dreads because (as Archie Bunker of All In the Family) once stated “He was painted by some Dago Artist”

Who gives a crap about what a stranger decides to do with their hair? Sure, it is human to have an opinion, but if you express that opinion, you should at least be respectful and considerate of the feelings of others, particularly when dealing with a stranger. I don't particularly consider myself PC, and believe free speech to be essential to civilization. I also think it is human nature to generalize and prejudge people by their appearance. It is not right, but everyone's life experience are different and people judge according to their experience.

It is my experience that there are good decent human beings and rotten human beings in every race, color, religion, gender and sexual orientation. Although it is easier to make generalizations by people's appearance, it is best to judge people by their deeds and character. Even those who we deem to be rotten human beings do have goodness in them and those who we deem great people have flaws in moral character. It is part of being human.

I do have a problem when people whine about the PC culture and say racist remarks on the same breath. That whining comes from having to defend their prejudice, when they in fact consider themselves to be good people and therefore can't be racist. When it comes to white privilege, when a racist remark was said in the past, nobody who was offended or disagreed said anything. Now times have changed, and thank goodness! Instead of just taking racists remarks as just another part of a sucky life full of constant humiliation, we can talk back with our own ideas and arguments without fear for your life. You must remember that before the civil rights movement, people of color were lynched for expressing their views. Now, views are challenged, and what you may call PC is just other people who have a different view from you expressing themselves. No longer people of color have to cower and hide with their opinions when a white man speaks.

In case of the video in question, I totally feel bad for the white kid. It is his hair and his life, and that woman had no right to touch him. It is my opinion that the kid should wear whatever style of hair makes him happy. You only live one life and you should do as you please as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. It is also my opinion that this black woman has free speech and has the right to express her opinion regardless of whether I agree with her or not. That's particularly true in an university, which should be a bastion of free speech. Where she crossed the line was when she began the physical confrontation.

Over half of surviving Ancient Greek Kouros sculptures (from c. 615 – 485 BC) are found wearing dreadlocks – Wikipedia

So? Onlygoodvibes described it well: dreadlocks date back to ancient Greece ;)
But its unlikely that those kouros sculptures with dreadlocks are all depictions of black africans as well. In fact that only seems likely if we go by the assumption that black africans were the only people with dreads back then (an assumption we already know is false)..
