That would take irony to a new level :p
Potatoes are from south America. Whiteys were oblivious to them until they conquered the continent (and destroyed many cultures) ;)

Wild Potatoes grew here in the S.E. United States.

My husband's grandmother's family were part of the Wild Potato Clan of the S. E. Band Of Cherokee Indians.

According to conservative estimates, the introduction of the potato was responsible for a quarter of the growth in Old Worldpopulation and urbanization between 1700 and 1900.[32] Following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire, the Spanish introduced the potato to Europe in the second half of the 16th century. The staple was subsequently conveyed by European mariners to territories and ports throughout the world. The potato was slow to be adopted by distrustful European farmers, but soon enough it became an important food staple and field crop that played a major role in the European 19th century population boom.[9] However, lack of genetic diversity, due to the very limited number of varieties initially introduced, left the crop vulnerable to disease. In 1845, a plant disease known as late blight, caused by the fungus-like oomycete Phytophthora infestans, spread rapidly through the poorer communities of western Ireland, resulting in the crop failures that led to theGreat Irish Famine.[27] Thousands of varieties still persist in the Andes however, where over 100 cultivars might be found in a single valley, and a dozen or more might be maintained by a single agricultural household.[33] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato

Yes we associate potatoes with the Irish but dude you’ve got to give the Irish a pass, they did lose upwards of 1 million Guinness drinkers to the potato famine of 1845

The Incans were also conquerors who destroyed cultures. A big factor in the defeat of the Incan Empire was an ongoing Incan Civil War and unrest among their many conquered regions.

But if that's where we got potatoes I'm good with it. Well, I'm good with getting potatoes, not destroying cultures.

Fascinating. But it kinda takes all the fun out of the joke, "What do you call an Irish seven course meal? A six pack and a potato".

Instead it must be, "What do you call an Incan seven course meal? Six gourds of unsweetened coco and a genetically diverse potato"

It doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Not really, I just pointed out how ironic it would be.

Anyway, we dutchies have incorporated potatoes in our culture at least as much as the irish ;)
It used to be common in the Netherlands to have cooked potatoes 7 times a week for supper... Still is common but its becoming less

Growing up in Boston (in an Irish family no less) just about every evening meal included some form of potatoes. When my parents got divorced we didn't have any money so ate Campbell's vegetable soup poured over mashed potatoes four or five nights a week. I shudder just thinking about it.

My wife is Nicaraguan. She grew up in California but on a heavy Spanish diet so didn't eat a lot of potatoes. It was rice and beans for her. She used to joke that if it weren't for the fries at "In and Out" (a burger chain in California) she probably wouldn't know what they tasted like.

Taters are good. As long as they're not served with vegetable soup. :(

Rice and Beans is the motherfucking bomb! I can make a 3 weeks supply for $20 and not get sick of it. Bologna on the other hand I wouldn't eat with your mouth.

Taters really are awesome: cheap, nutritious, you can live on them! I once got a bit over the just plain cooked ones (hey we got them on average like 4 times a week!) but they're awesome baked (esp in slices you know) in the frying pan too. And deepfried of course, the frites. Personally I hate plain mashed potatoes, it looks like bleak diarrhea to me, and it tastes too bland. Don't like the substance. But I love them properly mixed with vegetables like kale (farmers cabbage in dutch, not some fancy 'superfood' :p although regarded very healthy), or carrots, or spinach. If it was't for the irish famine and that wellknown note in history I would always have guessed the netherlands are the only place where they're so ridicilously often consumed, and are grown in such mass quantities.

We have some brazilians in our family and just like in Nicaragua they're used to living on rice and beans like we do on potatoes. I love rice and beans but usually prefer the asian variety where it comes to how to prepare them (well mainly the rice). Beans are considered very dutch as well. If you think you can live on potatoes.... well you can live on just beans as well :p Tasty lifesavers :D

Yep. Best part of marrying her was the rich, flavorful diet that came with it. Spicy food took me time to get used to as I was raised on "meat and potatoes", but once I got passed that I could taste the real flavors hiding behind the fire.

Remember "Conjunction Junction" cartoons? They have one called "Beans and Rice" that didn't get played on the east coast but my wife grew up watching it in Los Angeles. First time I saw it I was an adult and it caught me by surprise.

I grew up in Maine and remember "Beans and Rice".

The thing about hot peppers is that if you use them right they should act as a flavor enhancer for what you've cooked them with. It seems like we Americans have this stupid macho "The Hotter The Better" attitude that kills off the other subtleties in the foods we eat.
