"If I'm not mistaken, Hindus don't eat pork.."

Correction; MANY Hindus (but not all) do not eat ANY meat.

You are confusing Hindus with Muslims.

"So why is Christianity the only religion ever brought to topic when we talk of vegetarianism??"

Well this is a good point. You see people all over Hip Forums slamming religion based solely on there knowledge/hatred of christianity. There are hundreds more religions out there than christianity you know! Until people study them they aren't really in any position to declare all "religion is poison" or whatever...

"Yes, to eat animals or to not eat animals can be a moral choice, but I never understood how it ties in with religion... Too many hypocrisies in religion for me. But yeah, lets not get into that. I dont go to those boards for a reason."

Hang on a second...So on one hand you are saying you don't understand how religion ties in with vegetarianism but on the other you declare you refuse to learn by posting these questions on those boards? I'm sorry but that may come across as a rather ignorant and narrow minded view to some people here (not saying you are, just saying what those comments sound like).

If you want to learn then you need to stay open minded.

I'm sure if you posted your questions on the buddhist forum we'd be more than happy to discuss it their with you. I'm sure the same is true on all the other religion and philosophy boards...Hell, have you ever thought of using google and researching it yourself?

"Most all vegetarians keep their choice separate from whichever their religion is, including me, so it just gets annoying when people bring that up."

Well, sorry, tough. People often become vegetarians partly because of their spiritual practices and beliefs, they are often entwined and linked together.

Maybe it's just the fact you've decided you don't like religion? I dunno...

please do not misrepresent the role of a spiritual leader.

yes, the Tanach speaks of clean and unclean animals, THe tractate chillun goes into (gory) detail.
I theorize that it is to convince people that animal slaughter is not "worth the hassle" in the long run.
So technically, no meat is clean if one does not have a kashered kitchen as well as food source.

As for Hindus, there are levels of observance ranging from those who eat no meat ever, no meat (including fowl) but consider fish "fruit of the sea", to those who simply avoid cattle.
Pig is rare on the Subcontinent and found only in Xtian (Portuguese)-based cuisine.

actually a+o, to some people the reason why vegetarianism ties so closely into their religion is because it has to do with their body, and with their consiousness, so i can kind of see where they are coming from.
and not all christians think that other religions come from the devil, at least this one doesnt. in fact, i find other religions fascinating. just because i dont believe in buddism doesnt mean i think that all buddists are evil. (not saying that you said that, just clearing that up;))

Firstly, I included "if I'm not mistaken" in that statement, because I wasn't entirely sure. Just to clarify.

Secondly, it's not that I don't have an open mind or like to learn, but religion simply does not interest me, you are correct. Everyone has their certain topics that they love to learn about, or dislike learning about...and religion is one in particular that I have grown tired of learning about.

I have tried to research and ask questions in the past, and because I simply cannot understand a religious perspective, I grow tired with it. It's not something I'm programmed for... I don't see religion the way many do, and although there are times I can understand this or that, I can't *actually* understand it, because I, myself, usually disagree. I am not close minded, simply because I disagree. I am open to all people of all religions and I respect them for it. There are times I wish spirituality was important to me the way it is to a lot of people, but it just isn't.

And although I am accepting of others' beliefs, it's quite offensive to me when approached with a religious argument relating to one of my personal lifestyle choices, because I feel that they are disrespecting MY personal beliefs. If I came out and said I was a christian, I would see sense in someone commenting about the bible and vegetarianism to me...however, because I am not, all I can think when people approach me with such an argument is, "Why are you telling me this? I don't care about the bible so why should this make a difference in my choice to be vegetarian?"

And because I feel this way, I also imagine that it gets tired for others who do not share that religion. Though the US may be mainly Christian the REST of the world is NOT. Christianity is actually one of the LEAST common practices throughout the world, and it bothers me that there is so much focus on that particular religion when there are so many other religions that are actually practiced much more throughout the world.

I don't see, how mentioning the bible to say, a Hindu, would be respectful when speaking of terms of diets. That is what the person chose, because of religion or not, it doesn't matter... people just need to let it be.

If someone's reason for eating meat is because they are Christian, so be it, but don't place your beliefs on me. I don't mind people bashing me for being veggie, I'm used to it... but when it comes to religion, that's a whole other story. That is much more personal to me than being vegetarian is.

Like I said, I guess I don't grasp that because I don't posess that sort of spirtuality.

I have my own morals just as any person does, but religion does not play a part in it for me. I suppose I see why people may feel that it IS related, but I, myself, don't see a connection.

So basically what you are trying to say is that you don't like it when people get preachy?

Thats fair enough. If someone starts trying to change you or your beliefs , in this case your vegetarianism, then this isn't a positive action. Doesn't matter whether they are using their religion to try to do this or not.
But their is a big difference between someone forcefully trying to change you or having a dig at you and simply explaining why they are or are not vegetarians which is based around their choice of spirituality/philosophy or religion.

Remember A LOT of people see all vegetarians as being preachy. They are not.
Equally A LOT of people see all religious/spiritual people as being preachy. They are not.

Oh no, I totally get that if someone wants to say to me "Well I am not veggie because I'm christian" or "I am veggie because I'm hindu" or whatever, although I don't completely understand it, that's cool, and I accept that.

But usually I have people more than often approach my vegetarianism with a religious argument, directed towards me... Not speaking for themselves. My family knows that I am agnostic, and yet my dad will still sometimes use quotes from the bible towards me when my vegan diet gets brought up. He's usually pretty good about it, but there are times when...ugh.

I can laugh off most arguments people have towards my choice to being vegan, but the religious argument really seems to get under skin. It's almost as if they are pushing TWO issues on me at once, if that makes sense.

Genesis tells us that the Lord instructed Adam and Eve to not just eat a vegetarian diet but a vegan one no less!!! G-d alowed man to add meat to his diet after the flood because of the lack of plants in the immediate post-flood world.

The Bible tells us that G-d loves us and wants what is best for us. Therefore G-d wants us to be vegetarians!!!!

The majority of the 20 million members of the Seventh-day Adventist church are vegetarians some are vegans!!!!

Able offered lambs (and their fat portions). Cain offered "the fruit of the ground". God accepted Able's offerings, but rejected Cain's. Cain killed Able. Cain was punished.
    This happened before the flood.

Looking to the scriptures for moral guidance can justify the oddest practices. (Incest and human sacrifice included.)

A person can look where they want for guidance, but, after they have made their decision, that decision should stand on its own without an appeal to authority.

He asked for a sacrifice but it doesn't mention eating the sacrifice. The fact reamains that G-d intended us to eat a vegetarian diet. I'm simply trying to help the folks on here defend their choice to eat a healthy diet.

If you need to defend your choice (as opposed to explaining), I don't think the attacker will be satisfied with a religious explaination. ("Oh, you're a religious nut. I'm sorry; I thought you were one of those animal rights weirdos.") If someone attacks my diet, I respond with something like, "Its my mouth, my diet and none of your buisness."

On the other hand, if someone is wondering about your diet. Even if they are aggressive about it ("How can you do that to your kids."), a religious explaination is appropriate only if that is why you make your choice.

Giving incomplete reasons to people who attack your life choices just encourages them to get further into your buisness. ("If god wants you to be vegetarian, then why aren't you married?")

People who are curious about your diet, people who want you to change your diet and people who use your diet to feel superior are best dealt with in different ways.

(BTW, Isn't eating lamb a required part of Passover? Exodus 12 seems definate about it.)

Having the shank bone is pretty "required" but there is a veggie-oriented Haggadah available.
Rav Kook, who was Cheif Rabbi of Israel, was a veg.
Richard Schwartz (reform, I believe) is a proponent of veg diets in Judaism.
He makes many good points, but he wants all veg Jews to pressure their rabbis. I explained my situation, and he basically wanted me to completely and utterly call the rabbi down theologically.
OK, if I were as learned in Judaism, I might be silly enough for that.
I agree with different commentators. THat's OK, but to "go on crusade" is disrespectful and brings little but trouble.
My method, willing to talk when directly asked and being known as The Vegetarian, and deferring when someone is only on attack (the word PETA will shut me down. I also disagree with their methods and will not defend them), and being willing to show cooking techniques at someone's home, gets the idea of less to no meat (fish and chicken included-not always the case in Kosher) farther than if I were a strident lecturer.

Scientific research has shown that vegetarians on average live 11 years longer than carnivores.

When ya think about it meat is second hand food. The food grows from the ground the animal eats it then humans eat the animal. I'll take my food as close to the source as possible.
