    I had seen my pals start their dreads with wax, so I was warned cause they had problems...however when I started my dreads with DHHQ, I did put a very little bit of wax, cause I was afraid not to...my hair is so thin and fine. I redid them after a few weeks, with no wax whatsoever and they were much better. I like the DH shampoo, but I dilute it heavily.

    What about KnottyBoy SHAMPOO?
    Is that bad too?
    That's what I've been using for like 11 months now....

    I've never ever used wax, though

    hey, im a new member here, but ive been reading on the forum for some time now. i would have given anything to have found this site before i started my dreads. i went the knottyboy route and the wax did terrible things to my hair. i used the wax for about a year, then stopped. my hair did not feel clean at all no matter how many times i washed it. a couple months later, i decided to take one apart and make 2 dreadlocks out of it. while i was taking it apart i was HORRIFIED by what i saw goin on inside the dread. there was caked, dry wax and a few greenish flakes (which i assumed to be mold or something) that came out. anways, i recreated the lock into 2, then started on several others, redoing, and seperating them. when i was taking one apart, i got like halfway up, and the dread just broke off because the wax had made the hair so brittle. i still have like 5 or 6 dreads that havent been redone, but the ones that have look and feel a lot better. who knows, i might eventually comb them all out and start from scratch, but i dont feel like doing that just yet. anyways...love the forum and look foward to more reading on the site

    People always seem to forget that we have had dreads in diffrent cultures around the world for thousands of years...without anything..Natural with just water and various fruit and herb tincture extracts..
    Straight up caveman style with huge (especially the women) fat snake like dreads shooting out of the head...Medusa anyone if I dare.. Medusa probably had the most killer dreads... And Sampson of course...Of course Any woman would CRUSH a man. Women are blessed with lushious thick wonderful hair. Allthough I have had longer and better hair that some women ive known...:sifone:

    No, I've been perusing this place sense before I ever even had dreads. Before I came here I was already sure I wanted em and had my own reasons (mainly spiritual and anti-materialistic). But the love everyone showed here was amazing and I decided to stick around, perhaps one day providing similar great advice and stories to those that were given to myself back when.

    I started mine with the DHHQ bullshit. After a month and a half I had to strip out all the wax that was in my hair and re-backcomb. My friend spent 18 hrs initially putting my dreads in, then I had to spend about 12 hrs redoing them.

    I didnt want to tell her because she spend so much time on them! lol I kept my hair up in a ponytail while I was re-backcombing so it kinda looked normal.

    wax = FTL
    AND IT IS MAD EXPENSIVE!!

    Welcome! Read the FAQ.

    The simplest way to get locks is to stop combing your hair and using conditioner, but keep showering and keeping your hair clean (duh! there's a lot of misinformation about this...) Most shampoos leave residues and mess up your scalps natural oil balance which can cause your hair to get greasy if you don't use shampoo every few days. Using a more natural method like castile soap or dissolved baking soda to clean your scalp/hair is recommended. The knots start out small and slowly grow until they take over everything. Separate any large mats into a couple sections by ripping it apart from the hair tips. I don't put much stock in backcombing or twist and rip as these methods can result in locks that 'fall out' and then come back in because your hair is actually way better at tangling itself than you are...

    Whatever route you travel, reaching the stage where your hair is truly 'locked' takes time. If you want 'insta-dreads' you will likely be disappointed unless you go to a salon and pay way too much money for them to make things that look like locks but will likely be gooped in wax or fall apart quickly if you don't keep going back to the salon for 'maintenance'.
