Ohhhh I'm one of those that found DHHQ first.

I never purchased any of their products, but I did have some old wax I used in my little punk girl days. Also washed my hair like they said, with some pantyhose on my head...wtf?? And with dandruff shampoo to top it all off (I think the pantyhose thing is just so other people can laugh at you).

Sooooooo I had really bad dandruff and it never came out cuz I washed my dreads with pantyhose on my head and the wax just sucked a lot of the flakes right into the middle. My face was slick, my pillow greasy, and I was thoroughly embarassed.

After 3 months I cut all my dreads off, and after cutting open some of my bigger "dreads," I realized that using wax is the biggest joke ever, more than the pantyhose. Nasty shit inside just after 3 months.
I let my hair regrow for almost 2 years and started the process over again last month using the knowledge I gained from this place. I can't believe how much easier and worry-free it is this time..... The way dreading should be!

Those 2 website need to be taken down. They're serious threats to the dready world.

and thats exactly why yours are so beautiful
people seem to lean towards the wrong choices out of vanity
wanting it to look a certain way, how many times have we heard "i want to get my dreads done at a salon cause im afraid if i do it myself it wont look right"
    wrong choice..wrong reason
vanity is worrying about looking beautiful
letting go of vanity is BEING beautiful and not worrying bout a thing

I was a member here before I even thought about going dreadly. When the time came to research I started here, looked at dhq and knotty boy and a few other places. Then with all the info I amassed, I tried to figure out what was right for me, what were real issues and what was dogma and what was marketing.

Being an experimental kind of person and at the time really taken back by how strongly other people felt about other people's dreads and what they did to them, I wanted to know for myself what the deal was - and so I bought some knotty boy soap, a thing of DHQ shamp and some Dr. B's and tried them all.

People really like to hate on DHQ and I can see why if you didn't already know about wax but that site overall had the best information on backcombing I could find at the time and it helped me a great deal.

Of course this forum also helped me a great deal as well. It's where I learned about wax, DDC and tea tree oil goodness

I've been very happy with my journey so far and where my hair's at and heading to down the road. Nothing's ever 'ruined' my hair. Some experiments have gone better than others but since part of my joy comes from the experimentation, I have no regrets for the things that turned out poorly (like testing out felting on a few ends, yipe!)

    i chose option 2

well i knew very little about dreads and the process before hand. i just knew they were amazing, so when i came across DHHQ and there "brilliant" reviews i had no reason to doubt them.

well im on my second set of dreads after combing my first set out and washing all the shit out.

in fairness the only thing wrong with DHHQ is the crappy products they sell, not the techniques they tell you about.

Oh well im happy with my new set, despite losing out on 6 months worth of locking theres no harm done.

thank goodness for places like these forums.

never used wax myself, but at the place they made them they put in tons of wax. discovered this forum right after i got them done, and been wax-free since. but i still got wax in some dreads. a few got quite a lot too, and its almost been a year. i still use the knottyboy shampoo. dont know about dhhq shampoo, but the knottyboy shampoo dont seem to cause any problems. its their tips and the wax that is the problem

    Wise words Soaring Eagle.

I actually found their ( KnottyBoy) video on Youtube about how to make locks.
Damn, they made it look like Wax is the one true path. However, as I have learned in many different scenarios, the One True Path is usually within oneself and not what one is led to believe.

The Dreads come within yourself, both Spiritually and Literally and wax destroys that.
    Aswell as other negative effects.

    Namaste, John.

P.S. For those wondering. I guess my mom was just tripping for those few days because no action has been taken. I did get hardcore "grounded" for a few days but things are slightly returning to normal.

I waxed once, and that was right at the start when they were backcombed, coz I was scared of looking like a birds nest at interviews etc.
I tried putting a bit more on a couple of days ago but now dont plan to put any more on coz it didnt really do much, just made them sticky (although they did smell nice to be fair lol) sooo from now on just gonna let them do what they want..

and I wash them with a natural shampoo bar from lush, seems to do the job nicely :)

glad I found this forum otherwise I'd probably be doing everything Dreadhead tells me...

BTW if anyones interested theyre coming along really nicely, 3 weeks now, theyre not massive and sideshow bob -esque any more haha...i'll get some photos up soon

nice to see another UK dreadhead, I love lush's shampoo bars, although never used them on my dreads. I dont know if they are residue free or not, so tend to sty clear until the dreads are properly formed

yeah the one I use is residue free and doesnt have any SLS etc. (i know some of them do...cant remember who it was that told me that but it was someone on here...thank you if you're reading this!!)
The results seem pretty good so far and I wash them quite regularly (my scalp goes well greasy after a few days) so I guess its all good..

I wash my hair with something called alata soap that I bought in Ghana, although its sure to run out at some point to need some alternatives ey

Well I didn't use much so most of it came out with some really hot showers. There was some left at the end of my dreads that wouldn't budge so I just cut the ends off.

Knottyboy and DHHQ are such a rip. Even before I knew anything at all about dreads, I knew that goopy crap they were selling was BAD for your hair. It was just common sense for me....you have a bunch of tangled matted hair, add wax, and end up with a potentially moldy, slimy, sticky mess.

My brother in law actually talked my brother into using it on his hair...in the end, he never had dreads, he had tangled hair shaped into dread-like form by goo.....and they stated stinking and had to be chopped off.

The worst thing is, Both companies are still going strong. And they intentionally target young people who are looking for a quick solution to a longterm hairstyle/lifestyle.

Knotty boy makes youtube dready videos detailing exactly how to destroy your hair. And when I tried to comment, I got this

Needless to say, they didnt approve my comments. So, I was thinking about taking all the screencaps I made, maybe add a few user experiences (anyone wanna contribute?) and make my own anti-knotty boy/ pro healthy dreadie video.....maybe save somebody's hair.

I found them first and followed their advice. After 3 weeks i realised i had made loads of mistakes.

I have tryed to get as mch wax out as possible and changed my ways.

Currently 8 months down the line i have yet to find any problems...who knows what might happen in the future. I think i stopped using their products and following their advice in time.

    Found knotty boy first.

Thanks to the advice on here, I started the process of removing the wax as best I could 1 week into having dreadies. I dread to think how they'd be now if I hadn't tried to get it out...

Had my dreadies little over 15months, 99% of wax is out.

Wax sucks, and I only hope more people find this site before they find knottyboy/dhq!

    absolutely a must
we gotta do that and i love that idea
i mean just look at these poll stats...
and realize how many more dreads never found theyre way here?

(would any1 like to donate a wax dread for a lil flamibility test as well? i know my natural dreads dont burn easily but i'd think candle dreads would be a fire hazzard)

so what are u thinkin for this vid?
    i'm totalky into that idea...

hahaha, I'm glad you're into the idea, soaringeagle.

For the video, I had a general idea that I would just assemble information like a picture slide show set to music, show some user experiences, find pictures of ruined waxy dreadies, and maybe even use one of sprout's old broken-off lock (not lost due to bad care, it was an end that had a minor weak spot that eventually fell off....but it took 6+ years) and use wax on it, hang it somewhere to expose it to the elements just like normal hair....and eventually cut it open to show what happens. Problem is I have no wax, but if anyone reading this thread has any, maybe I can get someone to mail me their wax or other poduct to help with the project.

I was thinking I'd call the video "knotty liars" to use the same play on the word "naughty" like knotty boy does, but I haven't made up my mind about it yet.

If we can start another thread or if people on this thread would post their bad experiences (like what wax or other "dreadlock" products did to your hair) and let me use them as in the video, that would help out so much.

And then, we can show what nice healthy dreads look like, and maybe give advice on how to maintain them.

Ooooh, maybe we can start a thread and call it Project:Knotty Liars or something equally cheesy (hey, I LIKE cheesy) and let forumers contribute information, pics, whatever.
