What kind of mall do you go to? You obviously have no idea what you are talking about... STILL. Yet you keep on trying to cover up one bullshit argument after the other. Do you always judge a band after hearing 30 seconds of just one song? That is exactly the way you come off. The New Wave/New Music thing wasn't confusing at all. You meant what you said. You had no idea who the band was, yet you are still defending your argument. Wanker.
Your definition of non-generic music is probably some phony jam band along the lines of PHISH.

on malls... any i have ever been to. i have heard them (just can't get enough, enjoy the silence) while walking through such places as j.c. penney and dillard's. these are department stores.

some non-generic music for you: toubab krewe, zilla, bela fleck, marcus miller, medeski martin & wood, the motet, EOTO... although, it is funny that you use the term 'phony jam band' regarding people who are actually technically proficient with their instrument(s). i imagine... and it is a stretch to say i even imagine it... but i have a hard time believing it a possibility that you have even heard of any of the bands i listed. after all, the only thing i know about you is that you (obviously) really like depeche mode and evanescence, to the point that you can't tolerate a differing view on said bands.

i have no desire to argue with you... but i don't mind it too much.

That is a great list of musicians, thank you for assuming I am sheltered in by only the two bands that I listed... You are still full of shit on the mall thing. Did you google Depeche Mode songs? I am so sure that everytime you walk into a mall you hear both of those songs. I don't really care, but your argument is pathetic. I don't know where you are from, but I have never heard Depeche Mode on the radio except for on NPR. They are never on top 40 stations, like they were in the 80's, if that is what you are getting at. I can tolerate differing views, but when someone says something that is full of shit regarding a musician I am going to speak up. You pride yourself on listening to such great musicians that you have the freedom to generalize music and place everything into categories without even listening to them. I know a lot of people like you. In fact, my best friend listens to pretty much everything you listed. He too, has a stick up his ass when it comes to arguments like this. However, he does respect Depeche Mode and gives them credit for what they have done with electronic music. He is a drummer, so I guess I have to give him his due for knowing what he is talking about musically. But that is not to say that Depeche Mode or Evanescence, for that matter, are lacking in originality or creativity. Those are the sole reasons why I listen to them. They are expressive, theatrical and dramatic. Those three elements are seriously lacking in a lot of music. To say that they are without those elements is bordering on retardation. To say that they lack technicality when it comes to their music also borders on retardation and can only mean that you don't even listen to the music.

opinion:1 a : a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter

IN MY OPINION depeche mode sucks. that, of course, shouldn't be misconstrued as saying they actually suck... of all the music i could listen to, i say they suck because i do not like them. IN MY OPINION their music lacks the qualities i would consider listenable. i find it to be dry and repetitive.

those bands i listed weren't to prove a point. this is the kind of "non-generic" music i was referring to, and it was a response to you baggin' on phish (which i think is pretty non-generic stuff... at least until recently, but even that is debatable).

once more, i would reiterate that i am in no way detracting from your affinity for this band, nor am i trying to alter your views. why are you getting so defensive? telling someone you don't even know that they have a stick up their ass, are bordering on retardation, and assume that i have never listened to the band you are referring to is rather asshole-ish. that being said, i am sure my knowledge of depeche mode is nowhere near yours... but i have heard enough to decide that i do not like them. in fact, this is a point of contention with my girlfriend, also. she has made me listen to 2 albums, and my opinion was not swayed. and why give depeche mode credit for "doing what they've done with electronic music"? how come you're not trumpeting the praises of devo, the talking heads, the cars, or kraftwerk?

oh yeah, i'm from southern middle tennessee (close to a city named chattanooga)... and i have heard DM at hamilton place mall, and on a "lite rock" station which is (or was... haven't listened to the radio in some time) 97.5 fm.

I like all kinds of music...from John Zorn to Depeche Mode to Marc Ribot to Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Dave Gahan has a much nicer ass than John Zorn though...
