hahahah foreign invaders...PLEASE!! Tell me how it could come to that point and who would be doing the invading. It would be more valid for you to say they are needed in degense from our own government, but even that is innaccurate. We could NEVER defend ourselves from the largest, most technologically advanced military in the world!
The military is only 1.6 million strong, and even when not at war, 100,000 active troops were over seas. An armed nation of 290 million people I believe keeps the government in check.
A guided missile would easily put an end to any rebellion of US citizens.....IF this unlikely even ever occurred.
You really think a missile would put down a mass rebellion? We've fired plenty of missiles into Iraq and that hasn't stoped them and those fighters only number in the thousands, you really think a couple of missiles is going to stop a couple million people with AKs on their side?
Let me get this straight, you are a very pro-American consevative kid, yet you believe that automatic weapons, generally used for drive-by shootings and robberies, should be legal so the citizens of the country can defend themselves against the government that you seem to fully support? With the survellance technology and the might of the military against it, the US citizens wouldn't have much of a chance, especially when many people would be siding with the government anyway. i would probably be more afraid of a militia of rednecks with AKs than the US government.
Actually, most gun crimes are commited with pistols, usually revolvers. Very few crimes are commited with any sort of rifle. As for a militia of rednecks, if they're the only ones with guns that's what you get. But rednecks aren't bad people by and large, so don't worry we've got your back.
That last thing you said is the point I'm trying to make, have an armed population, and the government has something to fear, if a government has nothing to fear from it's people, then it has nothing to fear when making laws. And when did I say I fully support the government?
I'm not advocating banning all guns, merely sayimng that you shouldn't be able to go into K-mart and buy an AK-47, I think that is pretty reasonable.
But like the previous poster said, most crimes are commited with hand guns, and most of those with guns that are not legally owned.
I hear you about the illegally obtained weapons, but I really don't think we should be advocating the spread of machine gun ownership. Plenty of crimes are committed with AKs and the like too.
It's not our ownership of guns, it's our culture, take Finland for example, 1 of the few European countries where you find mass gun-ownership, their per captia ownership of automatic weapons is 10x that of the US, but their gun crime rate is much lower.
Yes, i agree that there is a deeper, more systemic problem with our culture that should be investigated.
Well, thats good news from my perpective, if they are available, i advocate very strict background checks and a long waiting period.
