further how is identifying an oddity a sense of self? it doesn't make sense unless they touched their own heads instead of the mirror which you didn't make clear, and shit, my cats'll do that, and they have something like a 1:20 brainmass to spinal cord length wheras humans have a 1:4 which is one of the things scientists use to determine animal intelligence...
