I think the death penalty is too strict, kill all the rapists, murders, and sex offenders, kill em evn if they are not proven beyond a doubt just kill em, We should kill everyone who is serving life in prison too, you know how much money america would save in taxes, I say kill and send their dead bodies to space

Because no matter how justified I'd feel my revenge, the law isn't about vengeance.

The reason why we have collective laws, rather then vigilantism, is that we as a society will hopefully come up with a more rational approach.

My revenge, isn't as important as society at large. Although it would happen.

Vengeance is due to social conditioning.

It takes a strong person.. to realise that they can put their mind at ease.. without taking revenge on a person. If you realise that anger towards a person who has hurt you for whatever reason is an un-necessary thing.. then you have no good personal reason to sentence them to death.

Also... i'd rather live in the hope that i could one day escape from pirson.. or be found innocent.. than be killed.. and never have a second chance.

The death penalty doesn't save money.

If we wanted to save money we could decriminalize drugs, and not incarcarate all those non violent offenders.

That's the least humane argument I've heard yet.

It also takes a strong person to sacrifice their own personal freedom and snap the spine of anybody who fucked with their family.

Lode, you're right about the state not being responsible to avenge personal issues. Good answer.

Seriously, think about it... where is all your hate for rapists and murderers coming from? It is hate that made them commit rape and murder in the first place.

Personally i'd try to hold no feelings against the murderer of my future child. I know it's easier said than done, but i would try to just treat them with no judgement.. as it is not needed. If you get all wound up about it.. then they are effecting you even more.

What is the point in getting revenge? It's a direct and animalistic route to feeling better about yourself.. but this can be acheived simply through thought.. and disgarding any anger you have.

I didn't realise it was so cheap to send things into space.

Although it probably took a twenty dollar deal to help you get spaced enough to come to this rational well thought out response.

    Humans are animals.

as much as we think that our brain makes us different/better/above this, we ARE animals.

Animals cant think reasonably. Humans can.
Animals dont have moral values. Humans do ( most of them ).

Yeh i know we are animals.. but by animalistic.. i mean.. it's primitive thinking.

There is an easier more logical route to feeling calm after the murder of a loved one.. and that is thought. You can talk yourself down... and realise that people do these things.. but you are taking the same thought pattern as the killer if you start to feel angry and want revenge.

If you can control your emotions.. you can realise that forgetting your hate is a better option than taking revenge.

I don't think that I would want to forget my hatred of somebody who raped/abused a loved one, sorry. what if you do forget and forgive and they do it again? Are you part responsible for the second time?

So. There is a time for reason and a time for action. My morals tell me that it is perfectly acceptable for me to murder somebody who has commited a heinous crime against somebody I love.

I also think that I could more readily accept if somebody I knew was killed in a crime of passion than if they were raped/abused and had to live with the fear/mental scarring that this brings.

Keeping the hate will only grind you down.. and make a bad situation even worse.

Just because i don't we think should take revenge doesn't mean i don't think people should be sent to prison.. i think prison should be about rehibilitation.. and making the person suitable to have within society... but never about revenge.

A murderer should be in prison long enough to be rehibilitated... but not just for the hell of it.

Thats why the death sentence is a load of crap... all it is is revenge... it doesn't show the love or compassion of our society... if someone kills someone.. so we sentence them to death.. we are just as hateful and cold blooded as they are. We should offer help. Thats what makes us different from them.

How do you rehabilitate a serial rapist and who takes the resposibility to decide when he is ready for re-entry to society?

It's a tough thing to do.. but thats the problem that comes with trying to live in a society full of all different kinds of people.

The freedom of the individual to live his or her life is too important for a person to just be locked up forever because pyschiatrists are making slow progress with them.

Too bad those Columbine school shooters didn't kill themselves...they could have at least given a cop the satisfaction of blowing their heads off

people that do the worst of crimes need to at the very least need to never get out again..the thing is that they often do.

I don't advocate the death sentence for anyone but cold blooded killers, and i am glad I live somewhere that has that deterrent for the worst of crimes

Everyone has all this sympathy for these monsters who do horrible things, its a waste of brain power worrying about it

another thing, keep in mind, some people can handle prison without much problem.

i don't know for sure... but i can imagine that it doesn't take much to murder someone.. even the nicest of people.. could get into the wrong situation.. feeling stressed and make that one wrong decision... i don't know about you.. but i wouldn't want to be carted off for something so out of character.

If its a crime of passion thats one thing. My death penalty is reserved for those who are psychos, who murder for fun etc.

If I did kill someone in cold blood, you might as well kill me, i would deserve it

Outside of my personal ideas on the matter,

I'm all for the death penalty as it is.

Banking on the myth that Western societal life holds true to the foundation of social contract theory, killing a criminal who would, left to his own devices, commit acts so heinous against the general good and will of reasonable people is not only acceptable, but the only acceptable thing to do.

Ideally, the innocent man will never be sent to his death. Practically speaking, innocent life will be the cost ensuring that the guilty are punished. Assuming that everything possible is done, all laws and guidelines are followed in court to prove both innocence and guilt, it would be more misfortune than unfairness, just as in the instance of the life taken by the criminal in the first place.

The difference between personal vengence and court ruled penalty is massive. There are few people in the world that would not seek severe vengence on the rapist of his daughter, sister, or mother outside of civil society. Exploring that option within civil society is an injustice and contrary to the good of the rest of society. However, the murder of the guilty within the guidelines of the law and orderis not contrary to the good of society, but upholds it. That is the key distinction involved.

Rehabilitation shouldn't be discussed as an option yet. There simply isn't enough evidence to suggest a full rehabilitation, whether physically or ethically, that is required before the notion of penalizing vs. rehabilitating is put to rest. Until there is, locking up the sick is the best way to go about things.

That itself, though, rests on the notion that criminals, and hence crime, is nothing more than a neurological malady that needs to be corrected. I'm not convinced.
