i cant see how people can really look at ths film and dont think it would have influence over people. i bet you that the year this came out, seniors hurt their younger students much more than before hand.
the problem with this movie is not the content, but the way that it is accepted and promoted. you heard it yourself, parents and teachers sometiems premoted the senior/freshman violence.

BECAUSE this film is so believable and down to earth and cynical, that is why it is bad. there is absolutely no sense of remorse shown. the only backfire is when the real dick gets paint all over him. but that bad guy isnt the sort of person who is going to affect kids in teh real world. its all the other guys, the way the protagonist joins in with it all, the way the little kid joints in too.

trippin you say that obviously trhe older guys are portrayed as mean and stuff. yeh sure thats true.. but it doesnt go on to show that its not good to look bad and mean. there is no down side, the mean guys are all having heaps of fun and everyone is treating it like its normal. i think a lot of people are missing that point.
its like a glorification (be turning it into a popular movie) of almsot everything that, while it is often acceptable in most circumstances, and has its place in our society, should not be premoted to teenagers, because the fact of the matter is that most teenagers ARE affected by their media because most teenagers ARE stupid and easily manipulated, often unintentionally. the movie contains not good drug use, but violent, destructive drug use. it shows the good guy getting mixed up with bad people and only feeling better from it, and showing that its a good thing. theres a senior guy pashing a first year girl? some people might not have anythgin against that, but at least in my society, thats jsut wrong. tehres gratified destruction of property. violence, everything that is usually put forward to censoring, but at a lower level. but unlike most films that are said to be too violent, ones with outrageous fight scenes and stuff.. the violence in this is believable. i jsut think thats where censors and even society makes their mistake in what they see as acceptable and waht makes them get into a huff.

i hope that made sense. remember ive only seen this when hell baked so thats the eyes i see it through.

oh and its not like its my least favourite film or that ive only got a grudge against this film. there are ehaps of other films id have problems with but this is a stoner board and this movie contains lots of stoning and is very popular, even though it is not a movie that displays hippiness and the good thigns about our culture, only the bad things and the bad people. hell, who has a moral conscience in this film? i think that is what is was written about though in the end.. a society where teenagers do everything they shouldnt. there are so many issues raised in the film, often really small or subtle. and its pretty smart for it, and is entertaning to many.
but the nauter of the film i feel makes is innapropriate as everoynes favourite. i mean, isnt that jsut a reflection of most people's inner values?

Well Bill, I think you might be taking this movie way too seriously. I'd say to watch it sober, and maybe you should, but you already have a preconcieved notion so it might not change anything. First impressions count.

Anyways, I don't think this movie is anything but a pretty good reflection of reality. The drug and alcohol use is not excessively bad, nor is it (like in a lot of stoner movies) glorified as wonderous. In this movie, it's just typical teenage drug use...immature and reckless, but also fun. I don't know how it is in Australia, but I know around here where I live, that's how people drink and use drugs. Also, like I said, the violence in the film is much like it is in life. Actually, as far as I've known, that kind of hazing is pretty rare nowadays, because parents are very ready to sue anyone for anything these days. Keep in mind the hazing in the film was just a one day deal, like a rite of passage tradition, rather than what would be constant beatings all next year.

As far as the protaganist getting involved with bad people (rather than play football) I don't see it that way. I just see a guy who is making his own decisions. Some of his friends are losers, but he isn't (look how nice he was to that freshman kid).

like the one girl said (sorry i cant remember your name) the movie was made to be graduation in 78.back then shit like that would propably go down no problem..i feel the movie did a great job reflecting that time period.. and if that movie is gonna make you more prone to violence than watching some disney flicks might do the same..

Wow..you're actually taking this movie that seriously and to a personal level? Maybe if it was some really overly violent movie it would be appropriate, but Dazed and Confused? hahahaha..

i know literaly hundreds of people who have seen this movie.
and i personaly know that no hazing involving paddles goes on in my school district. so in that way the movie did not affect my fellow students

also the only real property dammage that goes on in my naborhood is on the day before halloween...and its only done by gangster wannabees

this movie is not really affecting anyone in a negitive way...unless the person being affected is already a "bad" person and is easily influenced

there are too many people in society who are.

i took it personally caus i was stoned, its really quite simple. but those thoughts have stuck with me and although it was an alright movie in terms of being a movie, i jsut thought the content of waht was shown could have been done in a better way.

you people keep sayikng that it reflects the period great. and ive got messages telling me to not judge america by this film?

anyway remember i said it would have affected the teens in teh years it was released. obviosuly it wouldnt have too much effect now caus that culture isnt really seen anymore.
