Hmm, I think some of you don't get why some of the aformentioned films were so popular and some are now considered classics. From the OP's list; 2001 A Space Odyssy North by Northwest Pulp Fiction Forrest Gump These three all have the same thing in common and the same reason for popularity, They are all genre' busters, they either split open the established ideas of how a certain type of film should be made or created a mini-genre in thier own right. Some of them may not have the best plot or characters, but stand out because nobody ever did it quite like that before. Pulp Fiction is a prime example of that. Then to be including action fliks like Terminator, Dude it's an action flik, going around killing a bunch of people IS the point of the film. Same with some of you putting down kids movies, watch it from the perspective of it's intended audience, which for some like Shrek, is a many layered affair. Some of the others, Matrix for example, are "good" because of the introduction of a new and unique concept or twist, The underlying Sci-Fi premise of Matrix is great, Keanu Reeves killed it IMHO. And as far as any Hithcock films, Walsh I guess you don't get the concept of slowly building tension in an audience and thereby heightening the effect of scenes that otherwise may be ho-hum. That was Hitchcocks signature, one that he used to great effect and also influenced the way in which the "thriller" genre of film was considered and done.
Omy goodness...trainspotting was frighteningly horrible! Same with Requiem for a Dream...awful and depressing (despite Ellen Burstyn being awesome in it!)
I'm pretty sure Requeiem for a dream wasn't ment to give you a happy fuzzy feeling. I digged it but I also never wanted to see it again Trainspotting is awesome, great humor, great impressions of teenage and junkie life and some characters were just fabulously recognizable portrayed.
I LOVE THE DARK KNIGHT, although I will admit it wasn't that good of a movie. I just like the few scenes of the Joker.
Man, I disagree with a lot of you. You guys are a bunch of colostomy bags. Yet some of those mentioned films I agree with. Allow me to add a few: Juno - I wouldn't say it was bad for an independent film however it is clearly over hyped and I can't stand the horrible acting of Michael Cerra. It started out good and it went downhill fast. Up- Great beginning and great character development and disney pixar movies are great. But as the film progressed we got introduced to that stupid bird and the bad guy. The plot twists were terrible. The movie had so much more potential than that.
"It's Hitchcock so it must be good. Everything Hitchcock does is good. I know this because everyone else says it."
Like all directors he had his share of bombs; but he also made some really good movies like Lifeboat Rope Notorious Rear Window Vertigo Frenzy The Birds Hotwater
