I am no expert but I think its cultural. Chinese people are quicker to work together for the common good.

I was out in public today and many people were still close talking very few wearing masks.

I believe in China people were much faster at doing what they were told probably due to social pressure from there peers just as much as any government orders.

If people would listen to the suggestions we really could eradicate the virus pretty quickly.

For the OP and #2 poster - When the swine flu broke out, we at least had a vaccine for it. People by the millions got the shots, including me. I was standing in a long line at a fire house to get the swine flu shot. People practiced self-quarantining back then too in order to slow/stop the spread. But nobody called it a hoax either. H1N1 (swine flu) is now part of the flu shots we all get these days. Today's flu shots cover several strains of flu.

We have NO vaccine for covid-19.

 

Not only that but the prospects of developing one are iffy. At least that's what a virologist friend who works with Corona told me yesterday FOX news personalities and Trump are optimistic about .
