is it really important that kids be able to access myspace and facebook from school? Kids should be there to learn, not to update their favorite movie list and blog their oh so eventful day up through 4th period...

Every school i've been to has had a policy that only school work could be done on computers....so anyone who visits things like myspace/facebook are breaking school policy...

And you totally agree on school policy's?
    Damn...

And yeah I find it important.
Especially sites like this give you way more education then the whole school does...
    School doesnt teach you shit.
If I have a few hours of free time because a teacher didnt show up, or there is nothing scheduled for that hour, and there is nothing to do, then I would like to use the computers, which is allowed on my school.
If I then would be unable to visit websites such as this, or if I need to update something fast but it doenst work because of some sort of overrated control system, then that pisses me off.
That's why it's always fun to release new patches that change things in the windows registry so you can be free to visit whatever you want again :)

    So is it really important?
No, but there are shit loads of things that are not really important,
but that doesnt mean you should place a ban on all those things.

Kids are far more sophisticated than adults give them credit for being. They are tech savvy and will find a way around this anyway.

Plus you KNOW that if you forbid kids from doing something specific, they're only gonna wanna do it more!

In addition you send the WRONG message to kids and everyone else by using CENSORSHIP as a tool of social control. It makes kids think censorship is OK to use, and when THEY become the leaders of this country, they won't hesitate to Censor ppl like YOU whenever they feel like it cause, it's an OK thing to do and very acceptable in America.

Is THAT the lesson you want every school kid to learn???

    School...yes.

    Library, no.

I'd prefer that congress didn't enact this legislation and allow schools to make the policies themselves...however, i dont see this as some great evil.

Not really a first amendment issue, IMO.

I disagree. I think school is far more important than myspace/facebook/hipforums. There is a lot of good information that can be found on the hipforums...but it cannot, must not, and should not replace school or take up school time.

I worry that the ban may be too comprehensive...it is rather vague and a lot of things could be interpreted as 'communities.'

seems to me the internet is still a relatively new phenomena - when you think how quickly globally spread it has become in such a short time - and how quickly it has changed the face of buisnesses worldwide and when any censorship is implied it automatically hits the news - people are always discussing who exactly owns and governs the internet - I guess it's gonna go through some evolutions

Well i'm sorry, but say I would be on school for 100 hours, then only about 5 to 10 hours of those 100 hours have been usefull and actually teached me things.
The rest I already knew for a long long while (mostly thanks to the internet and because I probably talk way to fucking much :p) and a large part of what they tried to teach me was bullshit.
I mean seriously, if I get to hear after a year, that everything I learned that year didnt had anything to do with the new year, then why the fuck did they waste my time?
Also, if I get told at the end of the school year, that because I did nothing the whole year for a certain subject, I have to do it at that point, and that I can finish it within 2 weeks, then why the hell did I have to follow classes for a whole year, if it can be done in 2 weeks?

Maybe now you understand my point a bit better ;)

Perhaps. Then again, people will also steal and run stop signs...should we not have rules against that?

Kids are not supposed to be using the internet at school for myspace regardless of whether congress bans it.

    So this doesn't matter...

We censor all the time in the name of tolerance, public good, etc....surely the protection of children is as good as any other reason...right?

I think there are far greater things to worry about in the school system regarding first amendment rights than protecting a kids right to view myspace on a public computer....

its hard to believe almost everything isnt blocked from schools in this age anyway. fuuny, everytime we lose another right, i'm more shocked that we didnt lose it sooner. america just doesnt care, they could move us into a full fledged dictatorship overnight and nobody would even do anything.

    That's only your opinion,
not a single stupid rule states it is forbidden to use the school computers for anything else then educational purposes.
I mean wtf, maybe I have to make some kind of report about woodstock, where can I find alot of information? Too damn right, here! but shit... it's blocked, so I cant find the required information, thus I cant complete my work at school.

Yeah that's exactly my point, glad you understood :D
If a stupid ban would obstruct my "educational purposes" then it's even more stupid... :)

 I'm getting very tired of being treated like well tended sheep! "Fasten Your Seat Belts...Don't Smoke...Don't Eat Fat...Invest Here...Oh That Pop Has Sugar In It Better Not Drink It!!!" I've been on this earth for 44 years I think I can decide for myself not to stick my hand in that hot flame. This Government needs to keep it's sleazy tactics out of the peoples business. I for one am leaving the herd!!!!!!!!!

    Whatever Megara,

If there is any place where you can find alot about woodstock, it would be here, but you simply deny it because you are so destined to encourage the ban of these websites in public area's :)

Skip isnt the only one posting around here by the way :p
Oh for your information, my school did accept hippy.com as a good source...

Not only is hippy.com "a good source", but my book was required reading in a number of schools. So Megara's argument holds no water... :)

funny how 'hipforums' quickly turned into hippy.com...If hippy.com is banned, it would be because it links directly to hipforums... a 'community.'

I dont really see why forums and/or sites that bring people together should be allowed in schools. They're a distraction at best...

p.s. if you have a book..by all means, quote the hell out of that...but citing post 37 of "what was woodstock like" on hipforums isn't exactly authoritative citation....

    Errr,

Okay... to stay on the hipforums.com subject:
this community isnt only bringing people together my friend,
it also provides ALOT of information about hippy's and their lifestyle, events that occured, etc. etc. (And not only about hippy's by the way, about nearly everything that is going on or what once was :))
You cant just simply call this a place for people to just come together, this community is and does far more then that :)
This community isnt the same as most of the others... it's better :p

I think it would be easyer to rest my case,
you and I both have a way different opinion and it seems that we cant convince each other of our own opinions, you like restrictions, I dont, and it looks like that's final... :)

    Peace :)
