Communes still goin?

Hello everyone! I am thinking about going on a backpacking tour of a bunch of hippie communes. So if you know of any good "open" communes that allow one to work for their stay please let me know. I live in Canada but I am thinking about a tour down into the states. I think it would be a great learnign experience...i know what I got from communal living multiple people (6 actually) in the same house. It seems to bring you a sense of accountability. Thanks for everyones posts...and thanks to anyone who can give me a connection or two.
