    Hitchhiking for communes sounds like fun.. me and a friend are contemplating doing that next summer. Anyway makiwaki I like that you actually researched this whole idea and got some numbers.. I'm sure you won't have trouble finding people (especially in these forums). That's the least of your problems. But where exactly in northern Ontario is this land located?

    everyone seems to be searching for a commune searching searching.

    I have been looking for land to buy. here in canada there is a huge whack of land waiting to be purchase at very very low prices. If everyone who was looking for a commune was to get say 400-700$ we could all put our money together and buy a few hundred acres of land! we wouldn't be kicked off the land because we own it, and we wouldn't have to pay taxes because we'd have no income!

    plus it is canada! I have no problem with people escapeing the states and hidding out, and i certainly have no problem with pot/shrooms!

    But keep in mind I am not looking for "share holders" I am looking for people who are sick of all the shit that goes on in everyday life! the cell phones, SUVs, and all the other shit that annoys everyone...

    I dunno what else to say....get all your asses to canada! I promise you won't starve to death!Okay, I have a few questions. You explained the food which is kewl, but you need to explain other things, such as how the people would live, sleep...How they would spend the day. What about work? How exactly is it going to be? I've never been to Canada, but I hear good things. I'm assuming it's a bit chilly or something based on what the other replyer said. How is the weather exactly? Is there an insect problem like here in Miami? There are too many mosquitos here. Does it compare? I like the idea of not having electronics, but is there any way to communicate with the outside world, i.e;, post/mail?
    I like that you're not against pot. That's good stuff right there. I also like the fact that we wouldn't be kicked off the land due to ownership because here in the United States we work 9 to 5 to pay for bills and morgages for a house that the government can take whenever the hell they want to because it doesn't really belong to you.
    I'm an eighteen year old girl, I have no children, and there's a chance I may bring someone along with me.
    Just let me know all the information you can and then we can start talking. I would like to also know the exact location and how I would get there if I decide to go.
    Thank you for your help. I'm really serious about finding a commune.

    Peace and love,
    ~Sway

    What a great idea !!!
    I'm also sick of all this shit ... My parents told me "you've got to study, work and be someone" and I just want to travel and be happy. They don't seem to understand my thoughts. Never been to Canada (yes to the States), but I've met many ppl from there during my trips and really liked them.
    I'll go to Canada if this "dream" could come true. I've got a long trip up there (I'm from Argentina) so I need good info on what you're planning. We could start buying few acres of land and then we could expand :)
    I really like the idea of a young and peaceful community. Let's keep in contact.
    My mail is incentivate@gmail.com, contact me if you can so we can continue talking.
    Peace from Argentina,
    Nacho

    first off i totally respect this line of thinking. i would like to point out some sticky points not being considered to the fullest. housing is the major issue in this canada venture. you are talking about climate well into severe cold for months of the year. a simple shack/hut will not do. i am an architect living in central maine and have completed my first living space about 80 percent (including insulation and wood stove & fireplace) but cannot stay there due to minus temps.... so i will finish when the snow thaws and move in in the spring.

    What do you need. I've got experience in Outdoor cooking and pioneering. (Scouts). Find out how were gonna buy it. What we gonna grow.In a situation like that you want to know the resources around you. Somewhere near flowing water, Trees and verdant, arible land. houses? huts? then we'll need building materials. Seasons?
    I heard Canadian winters are freezing.
    So we'll have to build quickly and during summer/Spring

    I live in Montana, which isn't all too far from Canada, though I don't live next to the border. I have friends that hike to Canada from the Flat head lake to smuggle 'things' back here. I've lived in Montana all my life, and I personally think Canada would be one cold ass place for a commune unless we built cabins versus the little dinky shacks and hutchs that are usually found in a self suffiecient living area. I think it's a great idea, you should check in on the land though and get a actually price estimet. It should be land near a river, that way non-vegitarians can eat fish.... just another way of not having to buy food...

    I also know how to build these things called lifeships, it is a self heated building that constantly stays 65 degrees or more. They are made from tires, dirt, mortar, and hay...

    I don't know if I can live much longer in society, I am pretty sure I will have a heart attack soon. Canada would be cold. That would put a damper on the growing food. I am also looking for land so I'll keep you posted of any good finds... But I'm in.
    ~~~addition:
    I didn't realize till now that we were talking about northern ontario. This is a place that will break 70 degrees F in JUNE. Gets down to 15-20 bellow. I live in the mountains and this winter has been bad to us. 8 bellow was enough to freeze my tears and scarf I was using to breath through because the cold air hurts your lungs after a while. I don't know how many of you have spent alot of time in weather that is bellow zero but it SUCKS, bad! Then throw wind in...
    There is land all over the US, 25-100 acres from 10-200 thousand. Granted 200k is a bit much but just jump on some high paying hard job for a while. These jobs are all over paying 2-5 thousand a month. If 20 people split 50k thats only $2,500 per person. So find one of these jobs, save for a few months, have between 5-15 thousand dollars...
    I want to do this but in Northern Ontario? The animals would even freeze unless they were in a heated building. Bellow zero weather is absolutely miserable. Count me in on joining up but not in Northern Ontario, not even in southern ontario...
    For instance...
    http://www.elandusa.com/asp/detail.asp?id=85005
    I recently started a job working 5 12 hour shifts a week, it sucks but pays $3,300 a month.
    One thing to also consider is growing unique plants such as lactuca virosa or "Wild letuce" and/or certain strains of medicinal and edible mushrooms, the cost to grow them is very low and they sell high. Growing these on top of the food grown to eat would provide enough income to take care of "problems" should they arise and wouldnt require much extra work. Dont forget the amanita muscaria either. If able to harvest Amanitas they sell for $100 -$500 a pound. I am not saying I want to make some crazy business to make loads of money, but it would be nice to have it around incase we were to run out of food or someone breaks an arm or a building burns down. Shit happens.
    I'm in... but it seems to me that alot of people interested in this havn't actually done much research or planning. I'm not trying to offend anyone and apollogize if I am coming across rude, I am not intending to.
    Well time will tell.
    I agree with you ^^ my main problem is that if you buy land. you have to pay taxes on it, I say we buy a bit more then we'll need, call it a farm and become tax excempt, anything that'll get us out of that whole "money" ordeal. that's what I'm trying to escape.
