You make a valid point, but parents often make health decisions for their infant children, such as vaccinations, taking tonsils out, and circumcision. And circumcision is harder to do the older the child gets, and can be more traumatic. 10% or so of male infants ultimately have problems retracting their foreskins, and infant circumcision eliminates the need for a later operation when the problem becomes evident. And why hide the best part?

You compare circumcision to vaccinations and tonsil surgery, and then you go on to note that one issue with circumcision is that it is traumatizing to the child, unlike either of the things you compared it to. It shouldn't be an issue of how traumatized you want your child to be from mutilating his penis. You should just try not to traumatize your child, IMO.

I think the large majority of the problem with retracting foreskins is that ignorant parents think that they have to do it prematurely to clean it, which is simply not true. I seriously doubt that 10% of uncircumcised infants develop phimosis naturally.

As far as I'm concerned unless they, themselves, are medically qualified, parents have no right to make the decision to have their children unnecessarily mutilated, regardless of the reason. While it is true that the foreskin may not retract at first, that's simply because it's not meant to until around the age of puberty, when the boy is, at least, approaching the age when he's mature enough to make the decision for himself.

 

just read a new article that said doctors found that circumcision is well worth the risk and benefits but said that it is up to the parents to decide what they want for their child. "we wont say that you should get your son circumcised." was the quote from a doctor that said "benefits outweigh the risks"
so pretty much this will go on being an argument for the forskinable future.
