The confederate flag symbolizes different things to different people. This has always been the case. My friend who is a teacher had a child from India in her class. They were to paint things that represent peace to them. The child painted a swastika. The dukes of hazard had the flag painted on the top of their car, and if you recall the car was called the general lee.. this show is now being banned by the way, which is rediculous in my opinion. It was a silly yet light hearted show. The movie gone with the wind also brought back this flag to the people of the south with a sense of nostalgia and a representation of where they came from and where they are now. It was a symbol for general lees army and was used by him. Also known as the Dixie flag and The southern cross. Also known as a symbol of general lees lost cause. In the 60s it was adopted by the kkk and this is when some people brought serious shame upon the flag and negative connotations. The Mississippi flag has the confederate flag in the corner of their state flag. Canada use to fly the Union Jack and Have never fought a war under the Canadian flag, yet some would like to erase the history of Britian in this country. Our flag is not that old. I don't have any fondness for the confederate flag nor does it mean anything to me. This is just something to think about. How far will people take things? Who defines the meaning of it? Whose interpretation of that flag is correct? The show game of thrones has received backlash as well for an episode called confederation and were criticized for their lack of diversity.
The sauwastika is an ancient spiritual symbol. The Nazis adopted it and gave it a negative connotation when it's used by them or to reference their principles. Same with Lee's Confederate battle flag. The second national flag of the Confederates also carried the battle flag's cross in the upper left hand corner. It was known as "the white man's flag". Said it reference to the flag: The third flag also carried the cross. Carrying the battle flag to a demonstration is tantamount to asking for trouble as it was the flag carried by Lee to commit violence against the country he deserted in support of slavery.
The part you quoted is not from snopes, it is from another article referenced by Snopes. The parts Snopes actually wrote has a white background and the parts where they're referencing the other article is in grey boxes if that helps.
Whatever the 'Stars 'n Bars' may have represented 150 years ago, today it is flown alongside the swastika and is most definitely associated with racism, among other things.
Yes it is associated with, but that is not what it represents to everyone, as you said, among other things, which is what the quotes address. I don't deny that hateful racist groups use it. Stars and bars I think is a different flag?
My only point was that the meaning behind symbols can change. The Confederate flag today is connected to hate of, well, the gobberment, blacks, Obama and whatever the fuck is getting on my nerves today. I'm a southern boy and I see it regularly. It's just a piece of cloth anyway, funny how much idolatry goes on today.
Antifa bringing the iron front flag to the rally they were not a part of was ok because they are the good old alt left. It is ok for BLM to carry their flags and wear their symbol of the clenched fist becuse it has nothing to do with rebellion or communism
WHITE people only, who never gave a thought to what black people felt about it. Lee would never associate himself with ignorant redneck troublemakers, but unfortunately he no longer has any control over who he's associated with. This whole thread is starting to remind me of the old days when it was impossible for Yankees and Southerners to have a conversation that didn't turn into an argument. On the road to making America great again, it looks like Trump is going to reopen every old wound in this country and make us all hate each other as much as we did in the 1960's.
I do not believe Trump is responsible for the mentality of today. Look to the universities that are teaching a fascists ideology or to the obama admin that disregarded a lot of the population and gave special priviledges to hgroups based on ethnicity. He created a society of not equality but priviledges under the mentality of evening the score. People rejected it and were called racist for it. This is also happening in Canada, if you are not Canadian and or Christian and the office closes down for Christmas, New Years, thanksgiving, and any other Canadian holiday you are rewarded with three extra days off. Is that fair or are people being punished for not having another religion? And not being from elsewhere? I believe that civil war is a strong possibility if this does not stop, which is scarey and a side will have to be chosen by many and not for racist reasons but for their own survival as individuals and families, friends.
There is nothing wrong with civil debate. We can disagree passionately on a variety of subjects as long as we do it respect for each other. As there appears to be strong disagreement on this subject, debate is always welcome.
Please show us the fascist ideology that "the universities" are teaching. Don't generalize, give examples of courses of study, course content, specific universities, classes, and professors. Also methodological means of presentation. What you say may be true, or may not be true, but we need data if you are to be believed. Same with the Obama policies that you disagree with. And Canada.... I'm not familiar with their laws, please give us the specific statutes and the context of those statutes so we can see what you're talking about.
I don't know about that....please site examples. I do know that when Bernie Sanders came here to speak, the colleges emptied out in droves and cars parked from miles to see him, starting the parking early in the morning.. I have met many progressive college students here....so i don't know about anywhere else. i do know that when trump came around, the turn out was not as impressive here. I think the bible thumping, let's stop abortion and keep all immigrants out and deny global warming and the gun ho crowds won it for Trump.
It seems to me that you, like most people have only studied the civil war through a one sided perspective. A perspective only through that of the winner. You'd be awfully naive to believe how many Yankees would risk everything they had back then, to fight ONLY for the well being of black people. The northern states were Slave owning too. Many of them were bounty hunters who caught escaped slaves just to sell them back to the south. The northern states themselves, some of them continued legal slavery while the war was being waged. The war was so much more than slavery; it had more to do tariffs and excessive taxation against the agricultural intensive south. Before the civil war, it was part of the constitution that the states could secede from the union at will. The pledge of allegiance was not written by a founding father. But by a Christian zealot socialist named Francis Bellamy. The lines "one nation indivisible" was written for future generations to ensure that the states never divide and form their own republics. This was to ensure a barge federal government to take states' rights away. It's no wonder school children are required by law to recite the pledge of allegiance in the morning before class. The confederate soldier themselves fought for strong state government. At the height of the civil war, a mere 14% of southerners actually owned slaves. So why would the peasant class put their lives on the line only for the material possessions of the 14%? While I don't agree with all that the confederacy stood for, I at least recognize there's good and evil on both sides of this war. And until you take a look at the other side, it will be difficult to continue this discussion. I suggest reading "The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Civil War," and/or "Lincoln Unmasked" I think the reason the government and media is hyping so much about the destruction of confederate monuments right now is because, after Brexit happened, it could reignite the notion that states could break free from the union. Many Californians wanted Calexit after Trump won.
Al Sharpton calls for removal of founding father statues http://thefederalist.com/2017/08/17/al-sharpton-lets-abandon-jefferson-monument-owned-slaves/ Vice calls for the blowing up of Mt. Rushmore http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-08-17/lets-blow-mount-rushmore-says-vice
We need to remove Al Sharpton. Does anyone even take him seriously? He's like a parody of a real person. Removing statues of traitors is one thing; removing memorials to our Founding Fathers is just sickening. Where does the left's insanity end? What are we going to do next? Ban America?

What basis do you have for knowing why Union soldiers fought? The free states were those states in which slavery was outlawed or being phased out. There were four slave states that stayed in the Union. Maryland was under martial law and abolished slavery during the war as did Missouri, Delaware had less than 1,800 slaves by 1860 and was working to abolish the practice, in Kentucky 75% of the slaves were freed. Every state that left the Union issued an "Article of Secession". Only four states gave reasons: There was never anything in the Constitution explicitly about seceding from the Union, pro or con. Who cares about the Pledge of Allegiance? The Politically incorrect Series appears to be a Conservative attempt to rewrite history, I have better things to do. It's much better to read primary data or consult books written by actual historians.
