Asmo Some posts are less rubbish than others Me and Rat are old friends and I know him from such posts as ‘Hitler was Rothschild’s illegitimate son’ and ‘the world is ruled by Lucifer worshippers’ And he knows the rule about keeping conspiracy theory out of politics and it’s unfair on other posters because if this thread does go all CT it will be moved to the Conspiracy forum.
My main point is, few American workers still rely on having access to expensive production machinery and large buildings owned by wealthy investors. You're just as likely or more likely today to work in a small office full of cheap computers and basic office furniture, where the most important assets of the company are its workers' skills and experience, and its perceived image in the minds of its customer base. That's a very different business model, far from any of the stereotypes discussed in older economic literature. You were old enough to drive in 1975? I wasn't. Also, extensive scripture quotations belong in the Sanctuary section. OP may not be aware of that policy.
I was driving at 14 because I had a job, a single mother and a deadbeat Dad. No, it wasn't legal, so I cut through neighborhoods and such to avoid the oinkers. I didn't get my first ticket until I was 16 and had a license (and let my guard down entirely).
The original post isn't even RambleOns words; isn't cut -n -pasting entire articles against guidelines?
Politics Forum Guidelines (Where they are different than the general forum guidelines) As often stated this is not a bulletin board it is a place to debate politics. For that reason cut and pasted articles or links [including video] should be used sparingly and more as a way to highlight a persons viewpoint rather than as a replacement for a persons viewpoint. People that consistently post articles or links without comment may find their posts removed. (my bold)
I just read the guidelines after I posted and will no longer in this thread copy and paste. I am not the most learned but I can stand on my own and talk about this thread topic if anyone wishes to dialog further.
I'm not jealous of anybodys wealth. I don't feel threatened by rich people, many of them are quite nice.
^i'm not threatened by rich people so much as disturbed that some in this world live such decadent, lavish lifestyles while others drink out of muddy water holes.
So rambleON, other than stating the obvious and promoting Christianity, what are you proposing? Same to you Pressed Rat. What are the options? What system is best? How do we rectify the situation, etc.?
Hi meagain. I'm not necessarily promoting Christianity unless we both understand that to be christian is to be a revolutionary, just and selfless towards bringing in the kingdom of God on this earth. I understand that it is just to see the "Christianity" witnessed in this world as vain hypocrisy and mere pious superstition because the fruits of ignoring the very words in the book are going to be bad as a consequence and we have all been affected in one way or another by false service. Though I am convinced that the bible is in fact a blue print for the redemptive struggle of man I am also aware that it is notoriously made void in light of the spirit of greed, hate, selfishness and individual gain. I am proposing a few things. One is being educated free of ruling class influence (which can be difficult). I am proposing justice and equality and peace between man. It is a process which starts with community awareness. I am also proposing those who are interested in this struggle to examine the law of the Creator found in the first five books of Moses and do this FREE of all Western Christian and other world religious dogma and consciousness. Then read the prophets and then the revolution started by Jesus. You will find that the bible is about justice and it is laid against political and social contexts, conveniently stripped from the narrative by religion in the spirit of capital because capitalism is contrary to the order of God. The laws and statues given to man are not for private individuals independent of others, or are they mere superstitions and traditions to be observed once a week in the private company of a few inside four walls. They for nations and to organize societies righteously and are vast in dealing with economy, policitcs and how you justly treat eachother in these contexts. In short I am proposing justice on earth and peace. And this takes commitment, education, skills, and dedication and community. This is a process, a revolution against the oppressor. In this world, people are relentless 24/7 supporting the kingdom of evil and oppression. Where and what are the so called servants of God doing, why are they so passive? You can label it anyway you wish. You can call yourself a Hindu and as long as you are just and serving with equity you are serving the God of creation. Of course education is a big role in all of this because you don't know what you don't know, especially in a capitalist society were state educational institutions and its culture only prepare you to be exploitable, nothing else. Man's destiny is not to be exploited for the pleasure of a few. There is more to life than this. Promoting world peace is very commendable, but I don't understand what this education free of the ruling class stuff is. Nor do I understand why you focus so much on Christianity. What exactly are you proposing?
I don't know much about the US education system, but here there are private schools that change very high fees and to which the monied elite tend to send their offspring. In other words a 2 tier education system. It creates the famous 'old boy' network, so if you went to the right school you probably get a top job, even if someone better qualified is passed over. In the Uk we've now reached the stage where most of the top govt jobs (prime minister, chancellor, London Mayor for example & many senior civil servants) are all held by people who were privately educated. Some of them don't really seem to be that bright, and one has a suspicion that maybe they only got to go to Oxford or Cambridge because money also helps manipulate exam grades. But supposedly we live in a democracy. A democracy totally under the thumb of an economic and social elite. Our education system certainly helps to prop that up.
Same here. Plus the Republicans are out to destroy the public schools by siphoning off funds from the public schools to be given to private schools as vouchers. Some might call that upper class socialism, but it's okay if the socialism benefits the well to do. The U.S. public school system was once one of the greatest systems in the world...it is slowly being eroded away into mediocrity.
This is indeed one of the things that the US held on to after leaving British rule, along with slavery. There is indeed a 2 tier education system and it is most certainly driven by money and power. Those of us stuck in the public system don't get the luxury of having paid speakers (like ambassadors, members of congress, industry leaders, philosophers and scientists) visit the school. We get 5 days of drudgery each week and "standardized" testing that attempts to crap all American children into the same mold. This is particularly obvious in cities like Baltimore and Detroit. Despite each of these cities spending $18K per student, nearly 90% of them can't perform at grade level in reading or math. In Georgia the spending per student is around $9K with around 60% performing below grade level. I'd try to quote the Atlanta city numbers, but they can't be trusted yet thanks to the cheating scandal. Most of the private schools around Atlanta are faith based. The few that are not cost around $16K a year out of the parents' pockets. But for that they get schools with symphonic music programs, world class ballet and fine arts, REAL laboratories and international exchange programs. I realize the school voucher issue is tainted with all manner of bad blood from the teachers and public school administration, but if it keeps kids out of shitty schools which are clearly wasting every dime of taxpayer money they get, why not provide it as a means-tested opportunity for good students to escape complacent schools? But to answer that question one has to step aside from the politics and think ONLY of the children. Something that is pretty rare in Atlanta and so many other school systems. However in Atlanta nobody can blame the unions. There are none. Just the "old boy" crony teacher network.
The sad thing is that report after report have shown that private schools perform no better than public schools when they are compared on an equal basis. Private schools are selective, they toss out or refuse admission to underachievers and discipline problems. Public schools must take everyone by law. And Writer I see you are very quick to jump on the "blame the teachers and the teachers' unions" for all of our educational problems. Have any evidence to back that claim up?
This is precisely what I am talking about, the polarization. I don't plan to play that game. My experience with teachers and schools has come as a student and a parent. I was very specific when I said we can't blame unions in Georgia because there are none. So we have to lay it at the feet of the educators and administrators. We trust them with our children for MORE time than we as parents are able to have with them. We see our kids for like 3 hours in a day while they have them for the basically the entire day. I pay property taxes for schools we will never use again but I don't fight it because I feel it's still the right thing to do. I'll never forget the first time I was exposed to a school in a southern city. My father was on a temporary military assignment when I was in 10th grade. The math teacher I had used odd terms I never heard before. Things like "Times-ing" and "Plussing" and "Minusing". I was amazed not only how stupid she sounded but also by the fact that she could barely walk us through a formula without constantly going back to the book. Another teacher just made us watch films in class so he could get a nap. It impacted my education more than I realized because when we moved back to California I had to go to summer school to get caught up. We've had our children in schools in both upstate New York and Atlanta and ultimately pulled them out and put them into an excellent private school. Because of this we live in a $50K house and we've never owned a new car. But it was worth every dime when it came time to get them into college (Georgia has an excellent system for kids with good grades). Too often I hear teachers whine about how the kids are failing because of their parents. This is bullshit. The reason parents use schools at all is because most of us know we're not qualified to educate. So we put our trust in "professional" educators. I can tell you now that you get what you pay for far too often. I don't care if a teacher is in a union. But I also don't see how it helps the students at all. It seems to foster a division that we should not have. I think the department of education has been a failure and that states should handle it themselves. Not because I'm a "con", which I am not (though I am accused of it for all kinds of odd reasons), but because I can clearly see that the students are a secondary priority and have been for decades. I will admit though, I do miss Mr. Strong at Marin county high. He always had the best weed! I'd have more respect for unions if they bothered to modernize and maybe shed all the slimy/shady connections. The fact that they engaged in polarized politics at all should be a huge red flag for all of us. But it's not because politics has become a joke in the US. It might also help if the unions lose all that "fighting" talk in their literature. Plenty of us are tired of the endless bickering and fight talk. We want results, not finger pointing. On the issue of the quality of private schools, I might buy your claim about the faith-based schools. But to lump all private schools into the same category with them is not going to paint an accurate picture. And isn't accuracy what we want when we talk about schools? Or do we just want what "feels" right?
Okay writer, now back up your claims. The only factor that determines the quality of education is the teachers and the administrators? Students don't count as all students are the same. Parents don't count as all parents are the same. Social conditioning doesn't count as there is none, (At least no negative factors as it is all positive until the teachers and administrators enter the picture). Poverty and malnutrition have no bearing, nor do broken families, access to drugs, politics, gerrymandering of school district borders, poor funding, over crowded school systems and classrooms, bias curricula, gangs, weapons in school, selective enrollment in private schools, etc., etc., etc. No, its all the teacher and administrators. What a crock of shit. And you talk about polarization!!! You only saw your kids for 3 hours a day! Why don't you stay home some time and hang around with them? Schools around here operate about 7-7 1/2 hours a day for about 180 days a year. That leaves about 16 hours in the rest of the day, where in the heck were you and your kids the rest of the time? That's 1,350 hours a year out of 8,760. Sounds like your kids were running around the streets an awful lot. You pay property taxes because you own property. Property owners are expected to contribute to the welfare of the society. Another poor soul who claims he had a shitty education so he takes it out on every teacher and administrator in the country. Too often I hear parents whine about how the kids are failing because of their teachers. This is bullshit. Do you have any idea what teacher's unions do?? Any at all? What divisions? What slime and sleaze does the NEA or AFT foster? Be specific, how do they hurt education? A second priority for who? The teachers? Teachers in Chester Upland School District in Pennsylvania were working without pay this year due to a budget impasse by the state government. Erie teachers are willing to work without pay. So this do nothing job, with exceptional vacation time, and huge opportunities to bully kids and parents can't find enough people to fill these glamorous positions! Where are you getting your data? Sources please!!! CEP research. NCES report.
Writer You seem to be pushing a politically right wing viewpoint and then claiming any opposition to it is politically motivated ‘polarization’- that is disingenuous at best. It seems to be basically saying if you oppose my views then you must be traitors trying to divide society, it’s a trick used by many a authoritarian regime.
