we grow and raise everything we consume. the only thing we purchase from the store is flour, rice, sugar, coffee, tea and oil.
i currently live in an apartment. when i have a yard again, i will resume gardening. but that is kind of irrelevant in this thread, since it was asking people to state their preference between frozen and canned food, with fresh intentionally left out due to its obvious superiority. also, you don't grow meat in a garden.
ive seen some pretty impressive gardens grown on apartment terraces.. and you can always raise guinea pigs or rabbits for your meat in a apartment.. just sayin..
rabbit is hands down the most cost effective meat one can raise. 3 does and 1 male can produce 340 pounds of meat a year.. our doe just had 9 babies and they will be ready to butcher in 6 weeks at 2 1/2 pounds a piece. by butchering time we will already have a litter of babies again.. they are very productive.
yeah, i know i could do that if i have to. the need is not there right now though, and growing plants in pots on my patio is just not the same as having an actual in-ground garden. plus my patio is shaded pretty much all day. and i think it would probably actually be more expensive to raise animals in my apartment, since they charge a hefty pet rent here. but yes, it is true that those things could be done in an apartment.
no there is a simple and humane method to killing them.. check this out.. http://www.buildanark.net/videos/rabbit_killing.mov no suffering,no blood,no fuss,no muss..lol
I could maybe chop a chicken A rabbit has a different look in it's eyes that I think would haunt me I am about to watch the vid now
That is not as brutal but I do not think I would have thought but I don't think I would have the heart
oh if you were hungry i am sure you would find the heart.. we made a decision many years ago to strive for a goal of sustainability here. as we are meat eaters killing and butchering our own meat is part of it.. as undies said, you get used to it.. think of it as doing it for mother earth..lol
butcher will charge you 40 to 60 cents a pound plus a kill fee. for larger animals the kill fee is between 10 and 25 bucks.. dunno about rabbits, we have never taken anything smaller than a hog..
:cheers2: There's so much less clutter. I've had them disabled for well over a year, and I turned them back the other day as a trial.. no go! I don't understand why you'd want giant photos on every single post you make.. That's all well and good, but you gotta eat meat and other stuff too. If you're gonna eat one thing fresh, they all need to be fresh. And meat is expeeeeensive. Also, I'm lazy, and I can buy things of frozen boths that are like $5-6 (which is about as cheap as a meal gets these parts, make it yourself or no)
