I can read music very well, can play several instruments, and don't need the sheet music of a song to figure out what it is. most of the time I am in front of the piano, or playing my clarinet, I'm just playing with what sounds nice...
yeah. i can do that on flute. i can freestyle very well but be honest did you learn to read music first or learn to free style first?
I am not convinced reading music is important unless one wants to play other peoples music. The hard part of playing an instrument, to a beginner, is usually the mental part of learning to think in music, once a person is good at one instrument it is far easier to learn how to play others.
yeah but how do you learn without reading music? tell me what you can play fluently without reading music... you know practice n all. im not doubting it but i seriously think most ppl who suggest reading music doesn't matter cant play anything or if they do its guitar, drums or piano. reading music is key. THEN once u learn to read and play other's music.. THEN you can freestyle but i seriously wanna hear from ppl who dont know how to read music, picked up an instrument and could play stuff just with the beat or whatever. i highly suspect it's much less then those who talk shit. i DO know reading music is not key... but i think it's a HUGE part of music.
yes i just fucked me in that post. but it's duality. it IS key for most ppl to read music ... at the same time it's not KEY KEY... it's NOT neccasary and i can admit it. HOWEVER as i keep saying.. i suspect most people who say reading music means nothing are just pissed cause they couldnt learn to read it and gave up early. id LOVE to throw them an instrument and see what they can free style without reading music. LMFAO!!!
I think understanding music comes more from listening to it and loving it then by reading it. Playing music loud with friends has always been too great of an experience for me too ever care if I could read music or not.
I've always been able to play by ear, I learnt to read music because it was interesting, great boon when I entered band.
cool. what instruments? like i said i can play drums by ear. give me a drum circle n i can flow but i wanna find one person who can play a wood wind (hehe) to an actual SONG via ear only? holler.
yes i can read music in treble and bass clefs......not that hard since i used to play a saxomophone for about 6 years.
i learnt it like learning a new language just learning the new notes and the positions of my saxophone......i cant play saxophone anymore but i can still read music. being able to read music is important if you play in an orchestra, woodwind band etc. in a rock band or someting like that its not important, thats why i play guitar by ear (i dont know the note positions on a guitar)
yeah i think you hit it there. i know a few chords on guitar though i know shit about notes on guitar either. but that's why i keep saying drums, piano, guitar.. are easy to feel out. other instruments are harder. and yeah i guess i've always done like symphony shit... going to states n stuff on flute playing HARD shit that you HAVE to read... i'd like to think it's a skill that'll help me later in life. it might not but i think it will. i think if you want to get REALLY into music reading it is key. hmmmm yeah my education in that way is largely like classical stuff that is hard to do... i would LOVE to free style on my instruments that i can do well but as of now im not there yet.. the connects n all... maybe some day... so yeah to sum up, it's relative i guess. you CAN learn without reading music but reading music is a huge key. it also makes going from one instrument to another easier. it's just good in general to be able to read music but not always neccasary.
