yeah when matty cant argue a point he goes to spelling/grammar. ;)

matty you know i heart you but tell me how really a person can succeed in music without reading it? unless youre a musical genious it's kinda key. (kinda wink wink...) kinda one of those things you GOTTA know, thought it is not the most fun or creative side. mandatory with a few exceptions.

Those who have a good ear for music lucky can often learn how to play a song simply by listning to it, so reading music is not required to write music or to learn some one elses music.

Maybe, when i was growing up i learned piano at the same time as my best friend. He could not read muisc, i could. Despite this he defiantley was the better musician. He could learn the songs by ear and his rythem was better. But that was my personal experiance... but i do know a lot of musicians who learn by ear.

Well, Beethoven couldn't even hear music, but he did alright. Learning to read music is somewhat the same.

I mean, for centuries musicians could neither read nor write, and yet music lived on. You'll find homeless and the poor across the world who have never read a sheet of music, but they could play you days worth of beautiful and endless music. It's a skill, but not necessary.

true. ive never been doubting the validity of this. ;)

i just think reading music is key for MOST people who arent musical geniuses.

question though... i already know the answer but... what instruments do these musical genius homeless people play? i have a feeling it's all subjective to the instrument. i picked up a guitar and could do some floyd even though i know nothing about the note on guitar and how to do them. same goes with drums. they are instruments that soul goes further then notes. id LOVE to see someone pick up a flute or sax though and freestyle like that. I'm sure it happens but I haven't seen it.

anyways i agree that reading music is not that HUGE a deal but anyone who tries to tell me it's not a skill that is neccasary for most people on most instruments... well i will laugh and then hand them an instrument and tell them what to play for me. cause it's mostly all talk (like i said minus guitar n drums...they are feeling wise more so)...

piano is another instrument that reading music is not always key to.

my brother and me learned without reading music.

other then guitar, drums and piano... does anyone have an example where you dont need to know how to read music and can perform?

Yep, I was forced to learn. My mom was a piano teacher when I was growing up. I'm glad I did, I have absolutely no natural talent for playing music, so it's nice to be able to read it and attempt to learn to play something if I want to or need to. :)

    hehe. :D

anyways yeah im not saying AT ALL you NEED to read music to make music but when ppl act like it's an optional skill.. i'd like to hand them an instrument. there are musical prodigies who do not need to read music as that is how their mind works.. but for "normal people" reading music helps to preform music. although i can freestyle on drums and i know jack about notes on drums. and anyone with soul can do shit... but reading music IS kinda key for most people to do music. just sayin.

no, but I could for like a semester when I took teaching elementary school music. I had to learn how to read and play simple piano, but it didn't stick and I hated it. I'm just not a music person. I sucked at the flute too. I listen to talk radio instead of music stations.

if it's npr that is rad.

flute is hard to learn actually but i grew up learning it. it's fun once you start to learn how to get good.. it took me a while.

music can be a bitch though to do. most ppl give up cause it's HARD. i know it used to be sooo frustrated but cause my mom is and was a music teacher i could not give up and eventually it hit me.. i got good and it was fun. but before that it was soooo frustrating that if my mom wasnt a teacher, i woulda thrown in the towel like most people do. music tends to come to people slowly though and then with a force.. you wanna give up... it sucks.. but you practice and alll the sudden if you stuck with it...BAM! you're decent.
