As Ellis said, sometimes things happen, and there isn't a place to put the blame (otherwise known as "Shit happens.") One of my children (and maybe my baby) has Tourette's Syndrome. So does my dh. Nobody's fault. It isn't pleasant to deal with, we don't know where it came from. It just happened.

My MIL was very defensive when our dd was diagnosed. "Where did that come from. WHY did it happen?" When I said Bear had it (he does, had it since he was a small child) She said "No he doesn't." Sigh. Yes, he does. Then she said, "Well, no one in MY family has that." I tried to explain that I wasn't blaming anyone, nor trying to "trace" where the Tourette's came from. Just trying to treat my child. (Which is something that simply wasn't done for my dh back in the day.)

Birth defects and illnesses happen. It is very rare that one can place a direct "cause" for most of them.

Assure your mom she did NOT cause your hearing impairment. It happened, and dealing with it well (as it appears you do) is the best thing. Looking to the past isn't really beneficial in these situations. Just let her know you don't blame her, either. :)

    Blessings,

    Maggie
