I think the media is a mixed bag when it comes to portraying racism. They do what gets ratings - and sometimes presenting white people as racists and blacks as victims gets them ratings, and sometimes presenting blacks as angry racist thugs gets them ratings. I've seen a lot more negative coverage of Charlotte - a friend of mine posted a facebook live video last night of the protests and it was a very mellow, diverse crowd. But all i've seen on the news is the rioting and nothing about the peaceful protestors. Not denying there isnt a lot of hate going on in Charlotte right now with senseless rioting, but there is also a lot of love..but love doesnt sale ads.
Its really like that. I see people proclaiming the media gives a onesided perspective but I have a strong suspicion they are talking about 1 or 2 sources and not 'the media' as a whole. Some people sound deluded because of it. What's curious is that these are often the people who claim to stay away from the mainstream media because it is all false and jaded :-D (so... how did they get an informed and complete picture of it? )
I have to read a couple of dozen news sites to feel even close to the truth. And the truth always seems to improve exponentially with the amount of days after whatever earth shaking event occurred. I can't imagine trusting ONE source of news. Even Fox News will still show a picture of a 12 year old when they do a Trayvon story. But, Fox News is supposed to be the hard right, all white, racist news network. What's depressing is how much damage all these lies are doing. I remember when we all got along a lot better. If we use today's "rules" Johnny Carson would be called a sexist, racist and probably a white supremacist. How does such a mighty nation whine so much about things that we cannot change, like the past? And how are so many of us fooled by the first story the media puts out? It must be the control freak's wet dream to run a media company. To actually cause wholesale riots must be a double-orgasm for such a psychopath.
Applying a generalization of group X equally to all individual members of group X. That's not quite racism yet. Now let group X to be a subset of the population defined by race. Doesn't matter what race group X is. They don't want us to get along. Sensationalism and shock sells. War sells. Whether that's making a politician money, or selling you a politician; sickness makes money and money makes us sick.
A Pakistani actor just got fired from a British soap for (allegedly) posting racist tweets about Indians. I say allegedly because I don't know what they were because I don't follow him on twitter and they are not saying what they were because they were racist. He is the dad in the first Muslim family to feature on long standing Coronation Street. Previously they had, and still have a Hindu family. Dev, who plays the dad in that got suspended years ago because he had a coke problem, he went away for a while, went into rehab, then came back about a year later minus the permanent, cheesy grin and wasn't as funny any more after that. I guess we'll never get to find out how Sharif's amazingly interesting affair storyline pans out now, what a shame. Unless they replace the actor... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-37466235
Proof that the word racism is not only overused but used wrong. Its the religion that is the bias. And therefore its prejudiced not racist.
Corrie producers are stupid. They fired Chris Fountain for making a low budget hip hop video rapping about drugs and whores, violence and foul language on youtube, then brought in several actors from the channel 4 series Shameless, which depicts more or less the same levels of depravity.
??? Thread title is "Can black people be racist?" Which implies you are starting from the assumption they can't
If one sits down and thinks about what is racism then we're all technically racist to some extent. We all define other people by skin tone. You're black I'm white etc. Truly we're all just human
I think the word 'racism' implies that members of one race consider themselves superior to members of another, not just that they notice the difference.
I was asking for YOUR opinions, which is why I called the thread that. If you actually read what I wrote, especially the part starting with The Knockout Game, you'll see that I do in fact think black people can be racist. Sigh.
I do apologize for not having read your entire first post. But I don't really follow the line of your argument in your first paragraph. You talk about racism and privilege seemingly interchangeably, which they are not in my view. I see your view in your second paragraph. Maybe you should have called the thread "Do you think black people can be racist". By the way, I do not buy the argument that black people can't be as racist as white people, I see no reason why they can't be.
^that video is betting on people being too lazy to really ponder WHy the black dudes have such a violent, emotional reaction to the sign. They just do, and so we can all sleep well tonight knowing all our negative stereotypes have been confirmed by some guy holding a sign.
