Can anyone give me one piece of SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN evidence that dread wax fails?

    if you're unsure.
    Don't use it.

Don't worry baby... I'm pretty sure my brakes work
    BAM! INTO A TREE

I've only ever heard 2 people who have used wax say its good. and I know 4 people who have cut there dreads because of it

Its like getting frayed rope and putting wax through it so it all sticks together. Whether you use little or alot at the end of the day its still just a clump of rope.
Point 1. The cast has to be removed with a saw.
Point 2. Nobody enjoys broken bones and is a relief when the cast comes off.
Point 3. When the cast comes off it often stinks as the skin underneath was unable to be washed.
Point 4. Casts look like bullocks.
Point 5. If dreads aren't suppose to rely on wax... why put it in there in the first place?

This should make it easier for you
Say you have 2 frayed ropes dangling out the car window. One with a little wax and one with no wax. As they both blow in the wind which one will have the most knots forming? The one that is free to blow twist and twirl? or the one that is being forced to stay together?

I prefer the saying If you use wax your dreads look like turd

why put it in there if you plan on removing it. As you wash the wax out your clumps will loosen.

    Wax is great.
Depending on how you use it. I use wax on my surfboard so water runs off it and stops me slipping.

I had the same mindset when i started buddy and that was about 9 months ago, I started using wax in the beginning, a tiny amount every few days, but its tough to get it out, i was using beeswax, not to mention there was way to much to begin with, and although in the first month or so you will be really good and make sure to wax and Twist and rip every day trust me on this 4-5 months down the line you will be lucky if your washing your hair twice a week, it just takes so damm much effort for a hairstyle that is about little effort, it's up to you it's your hair, but when it comes down to it who sounds better to believe, the companies trying to sell you something and make a profit, or the people who live with and have had dreads for years and know what to put into them.

I will leave you with this little horror story, me on day 1

it's not really like some secret conspiracy thing you know, wax just isnt that great

its more like a temptation to someone who hasn't thought things through in the long run. alot of people who think of getting dreads are already somewhat on the edge with all the "i hope theyll look good on me" type of stuff and they dont like the idea of looking like they crawled out of a cave not so long ago for like 1-2 years, and perhaps they decide to google a bit and ofcourse the knottyboys and whatnot jump up first and the stuff they write there sure makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, finding out about wax and 'seeing proof' of how much it can help probably seems awesome at first

by the end of the day i just think its about what people want for themselves, i'd love to have some accurate statistics on how many people cut their dreads considerably soon (few years counts as soon too) after getting them, i just think the bond and how it melts into your life and lifestyle is a lot stronger with people who choose the way of patience....cause damn, it really does pay off.

i used wax at first with backcombing...mainly cause i didnt actually know caucasian hair can form dreads without any help and thought wax was a part of it too..and also cause i trusted the guy since he had quite awesome dreads down to his bum. ...after that i was kind of like wtf though, i mean i was happy i had "gotten dreads" and shit but, it didnt feel right that my head was all stickyicky..researched a bit, heard some other peoples opinions on this forum like 2-3 years ago and never used it again, some hothot water too and it was gone with a week or so...ofcourse many like fell out and for the next year they were all frizzy fuzzy and confused...but after they had some time to chill, they started strongly forming again and getting tight and natty...and well im extremely pleased with myself for making that choice

Meh wax is alright. I haven't read everything on this thread cause I'm at college but I used it and it kept them neat then I stopped, they got messy as the wax came out and then they tightened up. I Think it might slow the process down, but you don't look like a tramp for the first few months.

Before wax my dreads were horrible and after they looked like dreads. So in that way it's good. But there's a limit to how long you can use wax. I say 4 months max.

perhaps people who put poop in their hair eventually spawned wax users in our age. doesn't matter if it is wax or cow shit or horse semen, mostly anything you put in your hair to "help" it dread is only going to get in the way of the real locking and give you the illusion of picture perfect drewads.

you're wrong on this... I've never used wax and my hair was hardened and locked up in 2-3 months.

You're making all of these arguments for wax, but I haven't heard you mention a single reason TO use wax. Seriously, I don't use wax, not because I think my hair is gonna fall out or the world may end, but because its fucking pointless... hair locks up quicker without that shit in there. Its seems stupid and pointless to have to go through waxing your hair, then making sure to get it all out, then waxing again. If you're so hell bent on getting it out every time you wash, then what's the fucking point of putting it in there, here's an easy solution, don't put the shit in there to begin with and you don't have to worry about getting it all out. Simple. The "insignificant" amount of wax you plan on putting in there isn't really gonna make a difference on how it looks anyways. Its just a waste of time and money and effort, that's all the proof I need right there. By all means, if you want to throw away your cash and waste your time on an unnecessary task, then go for it, its your hair, as long as you're not putting it in mine, I can give a shit less... Hell, go put that cow dung in your hair, just don't come to my house with it.

I just don't see the point in you making a thread asking for responses just to argue for it... there's no need for that... just use it if you want to and leave it at that. If you regret it later, then its your own damn fault. If you don't then no one cares either way. Do what you want and stop making a big deal out of it. Seems like you've already made up your mind anyways.

you say you've been on 20+ dreadlock forums? have you noticed that there are always deep cleanse threads? for getting all the wax out? i wonder why those threads exist....i have yet to see a thread on how to make your own wax. have you noticed the recurring wax related acne and dandruff threads?

ive had friends who used the recommended amount (about a pea size per dread) and them shits looked greasy and felt greasy. dude's pillow felt like it had been used to catch bacon grease. after about four months he got tired of it and it took him literally three hours to comb out his shoulder length dreads, whereas if he hadn't used the wax, it probably would have taken a lot longer and a lot more effort. wax doesn't contribute to the locking process. all it does is keep down the loose hair so you look 'presentable' for all the white people you work for.

i dont really give a fuck what you screw your hair up with, cuz im just rambling now. you might as well use mayonnaise for your hair. it would probably lock it up SUPA TITE YO. much better than wazz at least.

    ASTROTURF!

    Wax sucks.

Its about time we kill the non believers.

Am I the only one feeling like a broken record?

I'm gonna wax my dreads just to make a video of what the insides look like when you THINK you got it all out.

    All science aside....
Some things I assume would suck if you wax your head:

    Your pillows will be nasty.
Hair touches face, ie wax touches face... ewe?
Can you 'CLEAN' your dreads if they are waxed?
    I doubt it.
It'll probably smell funny... holding in the wax and water... mold... ewe?

There may be no scientific evidence...
But if you added up all the 'bad wax' stories on this forum alone and consider it a study.... there ya go.

The only people that I see defending wax are the people that sell and those people usually don't have dreads!

you want scientific proof, here you go... with citations and all.

From the Wikipedia article on beeswax (which is the base of all "dread" wax):

    "Beeswax has a high melting point range, of 62 to 64 °C (144 to 147 °F)"

    From WikiAnswers:

"The average (shower) temperature of 107.5 °F"

Wait what's that? beeswax melts at 144°F but the average shower temperature is only 107.5 °F? People don't take showers that are hot enough to melt beeswax? Is that right?

And just in case you try to argue that its just the "average" and that you take hotter showers, here's more scientific proof for you, from WikiAnswers:

    "(skin) burns at about 130 °F "

That's right... the melting temperature of beeswax is 14 degrees higher than the burning point of human skin.
Let me one up that even... from the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

"Most adults will suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150 degree water for two seconds. Burns will also occur with a six-second exposure to 140 degree water or with a thirty second exposure to 130 degree water. Even if the temperature is 120 degrees, a five minute exposure could result in third-degree burns."

That's right... at the melting temperature of beeswax, skin recieves 3rd degree burns in 6 seconds... 6 seconds...
So unless you're leaving the shower with 3rd degree burns, you're not getting all of the wax out. This is the reason that people end up having to dip their dreads in boiling water (careful not to get your scalp there or let your dreads touch your face until they cool) to remove wax from them when they finally decide to stop using it. I don't know how I can be anymore scientific about it, but I somehow think this isn't going to make any difference to you anyways, so just go ahead and use it.

Just to sum everything up for you people with a short attention span:
(Wax... non water-soluable, won't melt in the shower without giving you 3rd degree burns)

    Fuck it....
why are we all trying to convince someone NOT to do something stupid...
    when the
"I did something stupid" threads are way more fun to comment on.

When I had dreads I used Murry's beeswax (found in almost any store) and my hair locked up fine, after the first year I was able to wash my hair with shampoo with no problem and my knots were tight.
