Some people are very sensitive to caffeine, and going over 500 mg is an excessive amount for people who don't have a tolerance for it. I often consume around 400 mg over the course of a day without feeling ringy. No doubt too much caffeine can leave you unpleasantly edgy, but I still don't think it's as bad as the crash that ensues after doing lots of heavier stimulants like coke/crack, amphetamines or methylphenidate.
that's how it was for me. i've never felt so shitty before or after in my life. i didn't even know it was possible for a human being to feel that bad. i was fully out. the next day i was completely incapacitated and the day after that i was still feeling like complete crap. i was finally able to get out of bed on that second day, but a huge effort and a lot of time went into succeeding with even that one. this. i don't drink coffee, i don't eat dark chocolate (only white), don't drink tea, etc. the only products with any significant amount of caffeine that i use are Coca-Cola and very rarely energy drinks. that's it. (and drinking a whole 2L bottle of Coke even starts making me feel slightly bad afterward, btw). i tried the caffeine for scientific purposes only, just to see what it is. i took 900mg and while there was a slight high, it was a completely lame one, and the two days that followed....never again. lol. i've never crashed even on coke. apart from feeling irritable right after i'm done for the night, that's it. but i just go to sleep after that and the next day i wake up like a regular person all over again.
Well you really jumped the gun by consuming nearly a gram of it with zero tolerance. Of course you know that now. Depending on how strong you make it and the extraction method (filtered coffee, French press and cold brewing for instance extract varying amounts of caffeine) a cup of coffee generally has anywhere from 80 to 150 mg of caffeine. While the effects of caffeine might not be what most people would call a "high", I think it is in a subtle way, like nicotine or kava. It doesn't reach the euphoric peaks of the stronger stims, but most caffeine users find it to be a pleasant lift; I also think coffee goes great with a moderate amount of opiates (no point if you're trying to nod of course). I always drink some after I take my suboxone. When you say "never again" do you mean you never intend to consume caffeine again, even at standard doses? Or just never take way too much at once? A cup (or 2) of coffee, tea or yerba mate is a harmless, simple luxury.
yeah, it's not a 'high' per se. but just the fact that it does noticeably alter your physiology a little, that's what i meant by 'high'. just that there were some effects there. no way do you get any euphoria out of it. well, never again, i mean it's not my drug. if caffeine can even be considered that. it just doesn't have any significant effects to bother with it. i prefer intense stuff. subtle effects, i see no point in that. if i do something i want it to really alter my physical/mental state a lot, override my whole body and consciousness, not be barely detectable. i want a rush, every cell in my body charged, or see stuff that isn't there. now that's worth bothering with. besides, like i said i don't drink coffee, i hate the taste and smell of it. always have ever since i was a kid. I think Coca-Cola will be the only thing for me as far as caffeine intake goes, and i will opt for a caffeine-free coke if i can get my hands on it. unfortunately not every country in this world has yet started distributing it.
Well it's not euphoric on the level of something like MDMA or an opiate, but personally I do find it euphoric on a more modest level, like smoking a cigarette. At least I did before my tolerance got to where it is now. It is absolutely a drug, and I don't mean in the sense that aspirin is a drug; it is truly a psychoactive drug in the purest sense, just more of a functional than recreational one. I think describing it as "barely detectable" is underestimating it a little. I like more intense drugs too, I've dabbled extensively in cannabis, alcohol, psychedelics, dissociatives, opiates, stimulants, downers etc and plenty of those go above and beyond caffeine. But I'd still go mad if I didn't have my morning coffee every day. I love the earthy, robust invigorating essence of it. Of course whether or not you like coffee is a personal preference, but have you ever given quality, top shelf coffee a chance? It's like Tarantino said in Pulp Fiction: "I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it."
You might be surprised. I made this comparison earlier in this thread, but it's like the difference between commercial brick schwag weed and colorful, trichromed-out high grade or between standard swill beer and a quality microbrew craft beer. Like Tarantino said in Pulp Fiction: "I don't need you to tell me how fucking good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys SHIT. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it".
If you live in the States I could recommend something. What, are you one of those people who thinks of beer as being inherently less sophisticated than wine/spirits? I hardly ever drink anymore but I still have respect for the art of crafting good beer. There's a world of difference between: and
let's just say i'm more a whiskey guy when it comes to alcohol. beer is just not my thing. and i have tried the expensive higher quality stuff. i'm in Europe most of the time but i don't mind some pointers. i come to the states every once in a while.
Fair enough. My favorite coffee company is Stumptown which is based out of Portland, Oregon. I've tried at least a dozen of their different varieties of coffee which have been consistently amazing. Their selection is also very diverse, since the owner and staff personally visit farms in South America, Africa and Asia and buy what they consider the best coffee. As far as I know they have official stores in Portland, Seattle and New York but a lot of independent coffee places carry the Stumptown brand; they had a location in Amsterdam, but I heard it might not be there any longer. Anyway, when you purchase a bag of coffee at one of their stores they give you a free cup on the spot. What country do you live in?
