Today in class, this foreign student asked for clarification about a topic of moderate difficulty, respectable, but precipitating a lengthy explanation that was sure to bore the majority of the class. However, he expressed himself rather imprecisely so that it wasn't exactly clear what he was asking.

Seemingly a propos of nothing, a student a few rows behind the foreign kid throws his head back towards the ceiling and roars with laughter at the top of his lungs, and from timing and observation, I'm 99% sure he was simply outwardly mocking the kid.

And what a laugh. It's difficult to describe with words, but it was this sort of exuberant, out-of-control chuckle that burst forth through every direction in a cadence like slow-motion machine-gun fire.

There was an initial peal that erupted from his chest, a solitary "HA!", as from a sudden shock, then a seemingly infinite span of silence, followed by this infectious, shrill, tinkling sound, as though from somewhere far above an invisible wall of glass had broken and shards began falling to the floor all over the room, shattering further as they collided with the ground. And the way he had thrown his head back towards the ceiling, his hair flapping around wildly, I swear the whole spectacle resembled some manner of flightless bird engaged in violent struggle or something.

Observing this I immediately put a hand over my mouth and struggled to suppress a smile. As I looked around, to my amazement, no one else seemed to find it humorous, or even seemed to be paying much attention. One student in the front row, sitting next to the foreign student, and presumably a friend, actually turned around and even glared angrily at the laughing boy, and that was about the only reaction.

The laughing student folds his head in his arms, his back lurching intermittently, trying to control himself. The professor, for whatever reason, gazes out the back windows with a forlorn look in his beady eyes, his ancient brow softly creased, like a man whose been lost in the desert for years, and with no hint of emotion in his voice at all, says stoically "I think someone behind you may have the answer to your question."

At this the laughing student throws his head back again, his eyes tightly shut, and shrieks with pure, unadulterated joy.

But the point of all of this, is that the guy's laugh was so innocently delighted and full of charm, while being the product of a seed surely malicious. It was this diabolical mixture of childish, bright peals of laughter and the utter embarrassment and public shaming of another student for but asking a question.

I've never seen anything like it. I mean, the utter joy this guy had was totally sincere. If I had a tape recording of this precise laugh and played it for you, you would smile knowingly, realizing that you were listening to someone having the time of their life. It was like how a toddler will violently crush a small pet without really realizing what they are doing. The guy couldn't be so oblivious to the fact that he was causing emotional harm and distress to another human, and yet his laugh was full of the type of feeling for which all people search this world far and wide.

Perhaps there is no sweeter pleasure than publicly mocking someone else.
The entire thing was very Nietzschean. It was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life.

So I'm sitting in the back starting to think about what it could all mean, and at that moment I imagined the floor falling away in cubes of flashing neon lights and swirling together in a black vortex as Space Art starts playing from somewhere inside.

Water chestnuts. How do you all feel about them? I occasionally buy frozen vegetables, and they often contain these starchy little demons. I can't stand the taste.
