I actually know someone who is involved in a Buddhist group, based on a form of Tibetan Buddhism. I have seen the amount of books involved. Myself, I think it's probable that in reading all this mass of stuff, most of it is rapidly forgotten anyway. In fact, if you read what I said before, I was making the exact point made by the Buddha - that is is necessary to go beyond philosophy - or scriptures. So very likely, there has been considerable deviation and modification since the time of the Buddha, or else his message has not been understood by his followers in some cases. Because if they'd taken that as an axiomatic teaching, they would never have compiled such a mass of texts in the first instance, realizing the futility of so doing. Hence perhaps, the anti-philosphical turn taken by Chan and later Zen.
