Yep, sodium hydroxide is lye. The best place I've found to get it is small hardware stores, the brand I've been able to find here (northern Illinois) is Red Devil. If you want to attempt your own soap (SO much fun!) make sure you get 100% lye, the Red Devil stuff is marketed as drain cleaner, and it does the job for sure, but other drain cleaners won't make soap. And I know it sounds freaky to be making soap with a caustic chemical but after the soap cures there's no trace of it left, it's just the catalyst for the chemical reaction required to form soap. And thanks for the warm welcome jahmerimaka! Robin
I had dreadhead hq shampoo last year when i started the dreads, but i kept it in the shower all the time, and my step-dad used it all. luckily I don't have anymore, because it sounds like I would totally prefer Bronner's. How many people actually started at Dreadhead HQ before they found this forum?
I started almost 3 weeks ago with Knotty Boy stuff. Including wax (ugh). A day after my friend backcombed the shit out of me and waxed those puppies up, I hit the shower and scrubbed and scrubbed with the hottest water possible to get the wax out, I absolutely hated it. The smell, the feel, everything. Now most of the time I can't see or feel any wax, but when I palmroll I get a thin coating of wax on my hands, it's disgusting, I can't wait until it all comes out. At least I can't feel, see or smell it anymore, lol. Wax is evil!
I gave my boyfriend an entire head of DreadHeadHQ Dreadlocks™ three years ago. They lasted a few months before he chopped off all of his beautiful long hair because he absolutely hated them. Then I discovered Get Up Dread Up, and we went to the Rainbow Gathering and when we got back to Babylon his hair was dreading. We backcombed the front and the back is all natural dreads and he <3's them. I backcombed most of mine, but I have this whole back right section of hair that's natural and they're my favorite and I wish I had done them all naturally. =(
