I think my reasoning is valid. Just because you don't agree with it, doesn't mean that it's invalid. It's my opinion. My opinion means just as much as yours does. And I don't think my opinions mislead people. I think it just gives a different twist on things. Shouldn't we hear both sides? I didn't like the way the movies was done. I can't jump on this bandwagon. So sue me.

Because he didn't totally abandon his kids...that was my point.

    Completely baseless? No...it's reality...YOU don't appreciate it? Give me a break...

I'm talking about LIFE DECISIONS. I'm talking about the cheating and the lying.

I believe that these decisions had to be made in way that wouldn't reveal their sexuality. Just because Ennis couldn't provide for his family doesn't mean that he didn't love them. He couldn't give them the life his wife, and her new husband could, and he understood that. Ennis worked his ass off. You may not agree with his decisions, but he was definitely in a much harder position then you and I can even imagine..

p.s. I think your reasoning and opinion are valid, I just enjoy this discussion.:)

Thanks mush...I respect everyone's opinions, but I also have my own. Everyone's points and opinions are valid...I may just have different ones.

It's kinda like movies...if everyone's opinions were alike, how boring would that be?

That language isn't necessary and if you come in here talking like that again, I'm sorry but I'll have to report you.

Really, I never said your opinion was not valid. In fact I distinctly said that I'm NOT trying to argue you out of liking or disliking this film. But disagreeing with a character's decisions is simply not a valid reason for calling it a bad film. I completely respect your opinion, but if you can express yours, then I have every right to refute it. That's the way discussion works. But reasoning and opinion are different things, hence my separation of the two terms.

Also, the fact that Jack didn't abandon his children is a little different. His family either did not find out, or they did not let on that they knew. Thus Jack remained in a dishonest, loveless marraige while cheating with several others. Sounds even worse if you ask me. Although I still do not believe that Ennis abandoned his family. He and his wife were no longer in love. Yes, he cheated. But soon they were divorced. His life took an unfortunate turn financially and he was unable to provide for his children. He spent time with his children when he was afforded the opportunity by the court system. He let his children live in a two-parent home with their mother and her new husband. He allowed them to be taken care of by people who were more stable than he was. Either way, how likeable the characters are doesn't affect how well-done the film was.

I still stand by the fact that your one comment WAS baseless. If it wasn't, you would have provided some sort of evidence rather than simply saying things like "no it's reality" and "give me a break." And I still don't appreciate it. You really don't have to get rude about it.

    And LickHERjsh: Grow up.

To date, the movie has already grossed over $24 million and the cost to make the film was $13 million. [IMG] http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/2005/BRKMT.php

I have heard in the news that some theaters in Utah barred the movie from being played. I wish society would just get over themselves. [IMG]

It's obvious we disagree. I disagreed with MOST of the decisions that Ennis and Jack made. I didn't like the movie...and I'm allowed to dislike this movie. One thing I REALLY disliked is how the director didn't really give a very good timeline...that was a big argument I had against the movie. I'm by far not homophobic, but near the beginning of the movie when the characters really had no connection with one another and they had sex in the tent, both my boyfriend and I felt really uncomfortable...it seemed to come out of nowhere...

I won't re-quote you...but you did say the reasons I didn't like the movie were "pretty invalid" see the post at the top of the page. And my reasons ARE valid...to me...maybe not to you.

My evidence of what you say is "baseless" is the fact that I have many male friends, seen the movie with a male, have many male relatives that I've discussed these sort of things with before and they told me there'd be no way they'd have sex with another man because of alcohol or any other reason. I'm from a small town...the towns that Ennis and Jake were from small towns. Small towns haven't changed much in the past few decades. In my expierence that's what I've seen/heard. You may see it different than me, you may live in a different area than me...you refute everything I say anyway...so what's the point of continuing the discussion really?

They made no indication...I think the director should have done better with that part of it if he, indeed, was.

Ennis obviously hadn't had strong homosexual feelings...after all, he was getting married to a woman. Just an observation.

They were both planning on getting married, it's what you did..

I think that when they had sex for the first time it worked well. Ennis had been opening up, and I thought it was kind of obvious that Jack was "checking" Ennis out before the whole tent scene. Jack obviously initiated it, and I think Ennis gave in because he was lonely/horny.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Ennis really hadn't opened up all that much. He was the quiet type and Jack did most of the talking...Ennis didn't really open up all that much until after they had sex.

As far as Ennis giving in...what does that say about his character? That he just wanted a piece of ass because it was convenient and he wanted some? If that's the case, he didn't have much self control.

    sorry..
Jack and Ennis were both planning on getting married after they left Brokeback Mountain. During that time period marriage wasn't really an option. It was something that you did.

I may not remember correctly, but I thought that Ennis told him about his family situation, before they had sex. When they were drinking, they became much more open to eachother(like most people). I don't know, I think that the way it was done worked fine.

Many people give in to temptation while drunk. Even people who aren't drunk will often give in to the opportunity of sex. Jack wanted it, and it looked like Ennis wanted it as well.

There has been so much discussion on this film on every board I've been on, is it really that bad, as comming from a sexual view?? I know for a fact that it was written well and the acting is also good.

They don't show anything pornographic by any means...But you know they are going to do (or are doing) the action. I just felt like it was SUDDEN...like it wasn't leading up to that at all. It made me uncomfortable...just for that fact.

Okay, just please don't imply that I'm refuting what you say just for the sake of argument. It's not that at all. I'm refuting because I don't agree. And I was saying that the reasons weren't valid for calling it a bad film, not for not liking it. You can dislike it for whatever reason you please. Also, you keep going back to the fact that they did not indicate that the characters were gay. No kidding. That's because contrary to popular belief, there is no real way to tell when someone is gay unless they choose to act differently. To make them "seem" gay would be to go against some very important values the movie was trying to uphold, and that is to say that homosexual people are no different from heterosexual people aside from who they love and how they love. Your evidence on the other issue isn't convincing at all because it's based on a small group of people, some related, who live in a concentrated area. BUT, it doesn't matter because there is no indication in the movie that both characters were straight. Although, it was in fact quite obvious that Jack is not at all straight. He made suggestive movements, and later seeked out other men for sex. Ennis' sexual preference seems to stay a mystery, probably because it isn't all that relevent or important. Like myself and others have said, two people all alone up in the mountains for weeks with lots of booze can easily lead to sex. They had a very good conversation before their first sexual encounter. Ennis talked more then than during the entire part of the movie previous to then. Like Mushie said, men got married to women then. That's just what they did. People still do that. They might be gay but they marry women because they can't face the truth.

Anyway, I'm going to see the movie again on Tuesday with my mom. I can't wait. Has anyone listened to the soundtrack? The song "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" sung by Emmylou Harris is so beautiful. It melts my heart every single time I hear it.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only straight person who understands this concept. I know I'm not, but sometimes it just seems that way you know?? [IMG]
