I don't know about in the usa but here if you hurt someone as self defence when they are on your property, you are responsible for that injury, and charges can be made against you. That includes if you murder a burglar... ok so i probably got that all wrong but that's what we were taught.. And i don't have the time to read through all the other posts.
You can act in self-defence if you're in danger of being physically attacked, using reasonable force to defend yourself. But attacking someone who's not presenting a physical threat is assault even if they are in your house. It makes sense when you can be pretty sure an intruder won't have a gun.
Well fuck me sideways with a spoon. That is just fucked up. I actually used to kind of admire the UK. But, gee, the more I learn about it, the more a backwards country it seems, more so than the USA. Anyone in my house without my permission poses a threat to me. I have every goddamn right to opt for the course of action that most efficiently removes this threat. And to paraphrase the article posed above, if a few criminals happen to be shot, oh well.
It all comes from say if you had a big pit in your garden and someone fell in it by accident and hurt themselves, then it's your responsibility. I think it got kind of blown up from that.
And no self defence doesn't come into it. Sure you can say that it was, but they can still get you back with that crap law that i was saying about.
As a Londoner I can relate to that statement ,especially in light of the fact that New York cleaned up it's act with 'zero tolerence' policing in the 1990s. There is a lot of concern regarding youth crime in London but to be fair Paris had a youth riot exactly one year ago so it isn't an isolated problem. 'Hoodies': - teenagers that pull hoods over their faces are identified as the trouble-makers.Gun-crime & drug dealing in the deprived areas of London such as 'Hackney'& 'Tower Hamlets' receives huge amounts of publicity. Depraved teenagers film 'happy slappy' punishment beatings on their mobile phones which they share with each other. The problem is really easy to identify.London is a city of 'rats in a maze'.Everyone is out to make dosh -money.Success is equated in the amount of money you make.It is an 'orgy of capitalism' here in the capital. The people of the council estates & depraved areas don't want to be left behind or left out;.....hence they turn to criminality. It is the 'GREED CULTURE' that is to blame. It was started by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher & Tony Blair has made it even worse. Did you know that there is a serious alcohol/drink problem with young career women in London. Many women are 'binge drinking' on Friday-Saturday nights & there has been an increase in 'liver complaints' etc. Yes it affects men too but it seems particularly bad when a 'night out' for career women in the capital is to get 'rat arsed drunk' . Alcohol is everywhere in London.Teen-agers can buy it without i.d. In many ways the widespread & cheap availability of alcohol in London is obscene. Alcohol causes more deaths than soft drugs but whereas one cannabis joint will get you arrested ;- 3 pints of lager in a Pub won't.
Ooh hoodies.. i wear hoodies all the time hehe they're comfy. But yeah i get where they're coming from with that.
Lol!-Of course this is the problem that a 'hoodie' has been stereotyped as an 'automatic trouble-maker' & many shopping-malls around Britain have banned young people from wearing their hoods. Is Warwick suffering from this epidemic of youth crime that the topic refers to?. I have to be honest that London has a problem with disaffiliated/alienated youth. It is poor housing ,(sometimes no housing at all) poor education,no jobs,no youth clubs,& the media reporting on the rich snobs of London snorting cocaine & meeting at parties, art galleries & trendy movie-art houses.Where they usually end up lying in the roadside throwing up.
Well yeah all of that long post you did is pretty much the same as around here. I think the only difference is that although it can still get pretty rough, i don't think it's too bad in my area compared to some places.
Well if you are the one doing the attacking / killing then you are the one causing most harm and the onus is on you to demonstrate that you were acting in reasonable self-defence. Burgling a house is a crime but those who do it don't deserve to be killed for it. Those who attack / kill burglars who are not posing an immediate threat can be prosecuted since they may well be the ones who are objectively causing most damage and harm. America is a very different culture, far more cavalier towards life - they still have the death penalty for christ's sake! I won't go the route of trying to say one system is more "backwards" than the other ... suffice to say these are two rather different cultures with very different attitudes towards the use of violence. Violence towards people is far more acceptable in the States both culturally and legally.
Maybe hes got a knive or a icepick hiden .. you want find out like Steve Irwing when it goes in your chest cavity? .
Exactly. And at the same time Thatcher was doing her thing in the UK, Reagan was doing the same thing to the US. It's sad that so few Americans can see this. America's never been the same since.
me thinks ulot are talking bollox you catch a burglar in your house you give him a good beating stamp on his head a few times and genrally weight him in and you get nicked for it rubbish. The old bill are slags but there would not be nicking you for that if you turn around and said yer i court him in my house and he give up and i beat the life out of himwith a baseball bat and when he was laying there blood coming from his head i carry on then maybe and to be honest if you done that you should be nicked for being a prat anyway
You can, in law, use 'reasonable force' to defend yourself or your home from thieves. This might include incapacitating someone, or disarming them, but it would not include shooting them in the back while they were running away....
i think that goes with out saying and besides it more or less legal to own a gun these days but the you lot was makeing it sound was you get burgaled and theres nothing you can do about it and as for slaging england off lets have a bit of pride a i know it aint prefect but there is alot of good here no offence to the yanks but i would rather be here then there dont get me wrong i ve been there on hoilday and loved it ,but i love england londons one of the graetest citys on earth bar none
Thats nice but but your girl friend, mother , or grandparents are not in the same physical position as you are. unless you plan to be home 24/7.
