I agree that even Gilliam's so called 'bleaker' cut still ends as a victory of the human spirit as his mind and emotions are still his own, as opposed to the 1984 vision where even emotions can be overtaken by governmental oppression. Phenomenal movie and one of Criterion's best releases (along with their 'director approved' releases of NAKED LUNCH and FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS).
This film was very moving for me, The part where a terrorist bomb goes off in the restaurant and they carry on like nothing happened and the waiter rushes to put a screen so they cannot see, leaving these people suffering in the background. Some strong imagery
