A comedian cant make an ironically detached comment without being sarcastic. Sarcasm is irony, wether the comedian is a attached or detached has nothing to do with a joke meant to (at whatever level) insult someone or something in order to make others laugh. The word sarcasm is not impenetrable to defintion as are some of the other words you feel obligated to argue over.As for sarcasm 'only' being a way for neurotic minds to avoid pain, that is both true and false.
Often, it is true, I know several people who are hilarious because they are constantly making fun of others, while they themselves suffer from insecurity and a restless heart. But that is not always the case, and the kind of jokes
a person makes should in no way automatically define who they are. A sarcastic joke is a sarcastic joke, wether the intention is to teach or to simply insult. There is no big difference as you say, between detached irony and sarcasm, there is only a difference between detached irony and attached irony.
