birks are pretty comfy but they're wicked expensive ! if i were to find a pair, say, at a thrift store, i'd wear 'em. i much rather like seeing an old hippy wearing a worn out pair than seeing someone slide out of their lexus SUV wearing name brand everything and brand new birks!

Sorry, call me whatever you want, but birks are my favorite sandals in the world. The first pair I ever had were a pair of hand-me-downs. They lasted me from 10th grade almost until college graduation. I have just recently bought a new pair, and they are the best investment I could have made. They are very expensive ( i had to save up for a littel while) but it is well worth it for me. They will last me until I'm in my 30's.

i have a pair of generic ones from target i got for graduation cause i had to wear shoes and they couldn't be flip flops or too casual. since i can't walk in heels well anymore, i got them. i got dirty looks from some of the teachers too, cause it's practically a flip flop, but not. i would never pay over ten dollars for a pair of shoes. and mine are fake leather. plus my feet get torn apart by shoes easily and these i can just wear and wear. so am i a yuppie now? a poser? i'm confused, i bought shoes on the basis of their cheap price, comfort and non-heel-ness, and now i'm a materialistic poser/yuppie?

as to answer nathan11's question, the shoes form to your foot so they are (supposed to be) more comfy (and its also why other people's pairs generally are not).

heh, that's cool. is it just because of the materials they are made out of or something? because, i've noticed that all of the sandals are all made out of the same thing.

I got birks, but they arn't the super expensive kind. I paid 10 bucks for them at a grocery store. I dunno, I like mine.

Also, I really don't care what the fuck anyone wears. Since when does it matter? Names brands....cheepass bargain shit like I wear, (haha)....whatever, man. Just smoke some weed, make some lovin', & stop worrying what others are wearing, haha.
    MMMhmm.

It's all the name dropping from these fucking yuppies.
I myself didn't know what "Birks" were either.Like everybody
I'd have to hear all the time "I wear my birks","I'll get my birks" etc.
It took me ages to find out what they were.
As I say,Why don't they just call them "Sandals"?These old yuppies
seem so pretentious. Can you imagine describing somebody as wearing
Khaki slacks and a Tommy Hillfigure?
Why replace a noun with a brandname? It's so stupid.

I bought Birkenstocks from a local company, and they are all vegan (No Leather, Animal Friendly). But i agree with you, Birkenstocks are definitly a yuppie thing.

    Peace and Love,

I wear them and like them. I got mine at an outlet store. They last a while, you can wear them anywhere, and they're comfy too.

The arch is different. It takes a little while to get used to, actually.

Your feet are better off with shoes that do not have an arch built in, I think. If the shoe has the arch, the muscles and tendons in your feet that are supposed to keep it arched are just slack, sitting there laid across an artificial arch -- they do no work. Your foot atrophies.

Far better to just go barefoot. :)

This is so interesting..... I had always thought of Birks as being a hippie thing. The hippies that I knew growing up were very wise people. Many of them bought birkenstocks because they are a good investment; they will last you almost forever! They are very good for your feet. If you cannot be barefoot, you should at least have good shoes!

For my birthday last year my husband bought me a two pares of birks (sandles and clogs.) The clogs were on sale, but still it was a lot of money. If it hadn't been a gift I wouldn't have gone for it, but I do not rerget it now! I love them, they are so comfortable and they go with everything I wear! They are holding up SO well. The big problem I have is that they are leather  So much for veganism.....

I agree that the name dropping is gross, but they are damn practical shoes, man!

    Peace.

I have long thought about getting myself a pair -- for the time when I am not "allowed" to be barefoot. I just could never justify the expense -- something like a hundred dollars for sandals?! Nuh-uh. They do look comfortable and all, and they do have a laid-back hippie image, but I guess I just haven't found them necessary. Instead, I got a twenty dollar pair of good quality Reef flip-flops at a surf store. I'm on my second pair because I left my first pair (which was a slightly better design, actually -- a different model, I guess) in a parking lot by accident.

Most of the time, I'm just barefoot. :)

    Blue skies,
    -Jeffrey

Are we really making a big deal out of Birks?

As far as spending rediculous money for clothes I agree with Jeff but as far as shoes go, you get what you pay for. Birks don't fit my feet right, I've had them. I find that Clarkes are a better made shoe but my alltime favorite shoe is also crazy expensive, the Rockports. They are a hell of a shoe and feel great on your feet!!

oh yeah, Rockports are a hell of a shoe. My dad wears no others; he swears by them.
I have to admit that it is a lot of money, and most of us (mainly me) don't have it to spare, but you are going to pay it in cheap sandles over time. If you have it now, it's worth it, imho.

I got my berks as a gift. They are really comfy and I destroy everything I own but they have lasted 2 years of my abuse unlike any other shoe I have ever owned. I love them, so sue me! Anything can be criticized, my pet peeve is people who pay $100,000 for cars (especailly hummers). But in this world everything you do somebody will have a problem with it, from shopping at Wal-Mart (they destroy small businesses), shopping at thrift stores (when you really aren’t horribly poor), at mall stores like Abercrombie (see this entire thread), or paying $50 for a shirt at a small business…nothing is perfect and I’m proud to say that I am not.
