I think a major part of the argument is that both sides treat it as an either/or thing. You can either believe in God or Science. I've pointed out to Jahovas witness that Evolution is well outlined in the book of Genesis. When conventional Judeo/Christian religion couldn't give me all of the answers that I wanted I started looking elsewhere. Including studying with a Buddhist Monk. I realized looking at both Science and the Esoteric Mystical traditions of various religious traditions (Gnosticism, Kabbalah, Sufism, etc.) I realized they were saying the same things in different ways. For example Karma is simply the "Second Law of Thermodynamics" "For every action there is a reaction." Sufism does a good job of explaining String Theory. I was also impressed reading transcriptions Hazrat Inyat Khan lectures that he quoted freely from the Quaaran, The Old Testament, The New Testament, and The Vedas showing how essentially the "Fundamentals" of all religion are the same it's the stupid bullshit that gets hung on that frame that gets the message fucked up. The main problem with the way religion has evolved is that the emphasis should be on the teachings of the great teachers be it Christ, Moses, Buddha, Mohammed, etc. Not the teachers themselves. One of the things that frosts my ass the most about alot of Christians is they talk about how "Humble" Jesus was then quote the most arrogant line Christ ever said, "The way to Heaven is through me." Of all of the things that Christ said in the Bible to latch onto that one like your life depends on it is fucking insane. OK sermon is over. Stay Brown, Rev J
jmk, Yes I am a christian. You are not the boss over me, you are not God, and you don't determine who is a Christian or not. You are just a silly little man, and like Brent said, no one takes everything in the Bible literally. We have a modern interpretation of it. Thanks Brent for defending me. You seem like a cool guy, and jmk is wrong, you are not a heathen. lol! Reverand JC, you seem like a cool guy, eastern philosophy can be interesting. I like Buddhism as well as Christianity. And you can believe in modern science and still understand the value of certain religious teachings.
I dig Bill Maher. I agree with Rev, how he shouts down those that disagree with him. But I think he is clever and funny. I would like to get stoned with him.
Gotta disagree with.He can be arrogant and above it all about religion, but his show is actually quite fair and balanced unlike the network that uses that slogan. Also i've never heard him refer to all believers as idiots.Just religious nuts like Pat Robertson.:sunny:
Actually, i think your misunderstanding that last Jesus quote.Else where he equates himself to the way(his teachings).Keeping that in mind what he is actually saying is "The way to heaven is through my teachings(love God, love thy neighbor, do good etc.).I like to think of myself as being a very spiritual person and "Questioning believer" as beliefnet.com tells me.:sunny:
