Theres so many great guitarists out there you cant just choose one... but BLINK 182's guitarist is definitely on the top of my list!
    (sarcasm)

But really folks, there are underground bands that I have been listening to that have better guitarists than millionaire musicians living in their mansions... AM/PM, the blood brothers, as i lay dying, all have really good guitarists.

I must say I'm deeply dissapointed you forgot Joe Pass.
Joe Pass is absolutely the best guitarist, I must say. Perhaps Django Reinhardt or Frank Gambale, too, but Joe Pass is way higher than these two.
    Joe Pass, Borut says.
And if not he - then I must agree with Mui.

Well, I like Joe Pass.. I just forgot him. Same with Django... :p haha. That's one of my names for a child someday, if... Django... I love Django Reinhardt. Laurence Juber is great too.

It's easy to pick between them... you either pick both or it's impossible to pick either.

I'd say the modern version of hendrix style guitar would be Eric Johnson. The modern style of Jimmy's playing would probably be Slash or Zakk... But, listening to both of the modern styles of the original's playing, I like Eric Johnson/Hendrix combined over the other three.

Oh, and despite the opinion/fact that most people say they can't stand Journey, Neil Schon should also be on the list for one of the best guitarists, as well as the former guitarist for REO Speedwagon, Gary Richrath, as well as the current one, Dave Amato, who is also damn good. I also have to say James Young, of Styx, Steve Howe, of yes, and Prince is also a great guitarist, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd as well, and that shall cover progressive/70s/80s rock, for me.

Oh, and Mark Knopfler of the dire straits, as well as Merle Travis, and Jerry Reed.

I like what allmusic.com's opening sentence for Jimi is...

"In his brief four-year reign as a superstar, Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since."

You can't forget that he was only 27 when he died... everybody else mentioned lived way past that.

    Others that are really amazing...
    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Mick Mars
    George Harrison
    Jeff Beck
    Neil Young
    Frank Zappa
    Pete Townshend
    Brian Jones

Jimmy Page is not one of the greatest of all-time. Duh.

Joe Satriani is great as well, but I really don't like speed stuff... Eric Johnson is about the fastest I can tolerate, otherwise, it's just so over the top and the bpm rate is so fast, they really aren't putting any feeling into the notes. I like Steve Vai's work with Zappa. I think for his writing and guitar combined, neil young is great... but I have to say my two favorites have always been the vaughan brothers... Jimmie and Stevie. Robert Cray is underrated, but he's damn good. Clapton has also been one of my favorites, as well. Depends on my mood.

erm... ahaha... then there's Martha Vaughan...
