But Nirvana is whack.. They opened the door to grunge (grunge which is among the worst things to ever happen to rock music) which opened the door for crappy post-grunge alt-rock (like Bush, Silverchair, etc) which itself made possible the suckrock of today (including Nickelback, Three Doors Down, and other such wastes of vinyl).. Nirvana jacked the stylings of good bands like The Pixies & Sonic Youth & others.. then gener-ified it for legions of mopey mall teenagers, vegetating over a music that was once full of vitality, artistry, and even fun.. errghh, now if the "alternative" revolution had happened around 1988 or so.. then we'd be in the good
I know you didn't just dis Grunge and Silverchair? They were kids when they made that 1st album and I don't think they ripped off anyone. The 90s and grunge was the 2nd best time in music I can think of. It's only topped by the late 60s and early 70s. If the revalution happend in 88, you wouldn't know it. You were 2 years old and I'm sure Sesame Street songs are you knew. You didn't live the 90s as a teen and were not old enough to know what 1991 was like for music. If you were 5 years old in 1969, do you think you would know what that music did for the world? In 1988 it was Guns N Roses, Metallica, and a hand full of left over hair bands. The 90s and grunge seen was way over do. Nobody asked what you didn't like about the 90s, or the worse bands of the 90s. The name of this thread is best band of the 90s. Why are you here talking shyt about the music that eveyone on this thread loves?
Of course jam bands don't count. Because none of them, despite musical talent, are among the best bands in the 90s. I'd have to say my favorite 90s group is the Titte Brothers. Ohhh, yeah... I don't like any of the genuine 90s bands, considering all good bands who were famous in the 90s formed and started in the 80s. But if i had to choose a band from the early 90s alternative movement, I suppose I would choose The Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan is an excellent musician, Jimmy Chamberlin is an even better musician, James is odd (if nothing else), and D'Arcy...well, she was proven to be replacable. No band in the early 90s alt. movement showed as much depth, innovation, creativity, and ability to stay in the spotlight for so long. Nirvana blew up with Kurt Cobain's face, R.E.M. (who are actually an 80s band) jumped on and off the charts every album, Pearl Jam didn't let themselves become as big as the could have because of issues with Ticket Master, Soundgarden wasn't alternative (they were metal, for those keeping score), RHCP are an 80s band, Jane's Addiction didn't put out an official album for over 13 years, Green Day shouldn't even be a glimpse of a consideration (anyone who thinks they are worth a shit has never listened to Stiff Little Fingers), No Doubt are a mindless pop act who don't seem to mind being tools of recod companies, etc., etc. As for bands like Sublime, Weezer, etc. who certainly deserve some sort of appreciative nod (or perhaps just an appreciative cringe) were never large enough to be considered one of the leading bands of alt. rock. I'm certain I've forgotten some bands (I didn't mention underground bands because, despite their talent, they didn't enjoy success long enough or at all), but I'm sure you can get a general idea.
I'm in awe of your comeback genius. You were able to read my info, do some basic math & determine when I was born, & how old I was in 1988. My clothes are singed from that incredible burn. If you think grunge if the best the 90s had to offer, you need to seriously educate yourself about music & get off the MTV circa 1994-95 trendster scene. If you want I'll loan you some Flaming Lips or something. I'm not talking shit about anyone's taste or anything, I'm just expressing my opinion on a music topic- I believe I'm allowed to do this? I don't recall requiring your permission? I respect everyone here & their taste..except for you for losing your cool. Best of luck, old friend. Good music that came out in 1988 that deserves more credit than Nirvana: Sonic Youth- Daydream Nation Galaxie 500- Today The Pixies- Surfer Rosa (just for starters)- tell me, those albums are without merit?
First off, its not MTV that made me love the music that I do, or even find it. Maybe you didn't notice that MTV has no videos of music from the 60s. As for the 90s, other then Nirvana being on MTV twice an hour ever hour for months, it was not where I found all that music I loved in the 90s. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgraden tapes(yes I still had tapes in the early 90s) were in my collection before I ever saw a video. I was lucky to have a friend that was a fan of Mother Love Bone. That leads to PJ, Temple of the Dog and Soundgarden. Alice in Chains happend to be opening up for Van Halen when I saw them. MTV is still on the air? I don't even know what number it is in my 300 digital cable channels. I know the alt music seen from the late 80s and early 90s, but I prefer Dead Kennedys, The Circle Jearks, Black Flag, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, NIN, Butthole Surfers, Dead Milk Men, and whatever happend to Skinny Puppy. Hell, I saw Sonic Youth in the 80s and a few of the bands I listed above. I didn't miss anything. Just so you know, it was not a comeback to anything. As you know your opinion can be posted anywhere you like. I just wanted to ask you why here? Why are you on this thread of all the music threads to pick from? I'll answer your question for you, and maybe you will answer mine. Daydream Nation and Surfer Rosa are great albums. I don't have Today, but know Galaxie 500. I'll be sure to check out the used CD shop for it.
Hmmm well nirvana is a great band but they came out of the 80's into early 90's like rem and other great bands I would choose from but if we have to pick a band from more of the 90's I would say something like red hot chilli peppers and dave mathews tool for sure and I am sure others I have no thought of..and well pearl jam is great too but did make it through all the 90's...Although nirvana prety much made me who I am and like soundgarden and those grunge bands...I don't know shit......It's a really hard question.
"MTV GET OFF THE AIR!!!" -dead kennedies... and all of you who don't want to give les, ler, and brain their props are going to be haunted by Mr. Krinkle in your worst nightmares! And watch out for the aluminum baseball bat! lol. much love
After they recorded the process in the mid 90's dwaye goetell commited suicide. THe band broke up and Ogre and cevin Key went off to do there own various projects. I just heard a rumour that ogre and cevin reformed the band but I havnt verified it yet. I used to listen to them all the time (got all there albums) but I just cant anymore. Its the freakiest music ever recorded and I just cant connect with that vibe anymore (which is probably a good thing).
Yeah he was a heroin addict and had some serious issues (obviously) poor feller, such an amazzingly talented programmer what a waste
red hot chili peppers and lets just hope they keep going. also the offspring were quite good (still are)
