Nazereth did quite a good version of Joni Mitchell's 'This Flight Tonight'

Worst covers I ever heard were any orchestral version of anything not classical - well, apart from Frank Zappa..just.

Why would anybody in their right mind buy orchestral covers of 60's hits. How has there even been a market for that kind of debauchery??

The one that sticks out in my mind as the worst, in when Britney Spears sung "Statisfaction". Oh and Hillary Duff did "My Generation." I hate when these silly little pop stars ruin the great classics.

GREAT thread! i was actually compiling my "best covers ever" list just a few days back, for the fun of it.

for me the most awesome have to be:
donny hathaway - "jealous guy" (originally john lennon)
ben harper - "sexual healing" (marvin gaye)
pearl jam - "dock of the bay" (otis redding)
RHCP - "higher ground" (stevie wonder)
ben harper - "the drugs don't work" (the verve)
reel big fish - "take on me" (a-ha)
me first and the gimme gimmes - "nothing compares 2 u" (sinead o'connor)
nina simone - "to love somebody" (the beegees)

I thought Pantera's cover of Cat Scratch Fever from Ted nugent was good and their cover of Planet Caravan from Sabbath was pretty good too. I'm not sure what the worst is though.

Then there was this really, really, really bad cover of 'Comfortably Numb'. All I remember from the cover version is that the "I" in "I have become comfortably numb" sounds very similar to the 'Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Stayin' Alive' from the Bee Gees song. I still shudder when I think about it.

I'm a huge Stevie Nicks fan, but when I heard the Dixie Chick's version of "Landslide" I thought, "Dear God, Stevie, you didn't LET them do that, did you?!" It was terrible. The singer for the Dixie Chicks is not a bad singer, but she sounds so screachy and nasal-y in that song, it's terrible, especially after having been sung by a woman with such a deep, unique voice. *shakes head*

Wasn't overly impressed with Sheryl Crow's version of "Sweet Child of Mine".

Yesterday I heard a woman singing Phil Collin's "Life Is A Highway" (is it Phil Collins that sang that first?). Anyway, it was terrible. She was all weird and bumpy about it, like she was driving on the highway when she sang it. :p

I really liked A Perfect Circle's version of "Diary of a Madman" (is that the right title) by The Cure. They did a good job of that. Though the first time I heard it, I thought he'd said "Diarreha of a madman..." :p

Oh, didn't like Pearl Jam's version of "One Last Kiss" but I hated that song anyway.

Another awesome cover is Eric Clapton's version of 'Cocaine'. Then on the other end of the scale we have Britney Spears' horrible cover of The Arrows' 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll'. There have been some pretty good covers of that song but.. Britney? Guess she tried her very best to be a rock chick and failed miserably..

Guns 'n Roses Knocking on Heaven's Door and Live and Let Die ROCK. Worst goes to William Hung doing Hotel California. All hell broke loose when I heard him mutilate that song.

Nirvana has done some great cover songs.. I love the ones in the MTV Unplugged album. Like 'Lake Of Fire' and 'Plateau' (originally by the Meat Puppets) and 'The Man Who Sold The World (Bowie)..
