I guess those on long term unemployment benefit would also like to have REAL opportunity in life so being supported back into the work place isn't being challenged its just the rhetoric and lack of any real substance to support people who are poor that irritates. Let's be honest, people will never be given any true opportunity as they themselves become competition for projects, jobs and careers. Whether it becomes a party political argument isn't the issue, this is about devaluing people, both employed and unemployed. Stupid ideas as this one have been thrown into the mixing pot lots of times. Those who are unemployed have the real understanding of how hard it really is claiming social security and trying to get by day by day. Yeah, I suppose the parks and beaches would be cleaner.
Personally I think "work" is overrated: this is the 21st century after all, and we should be looking at ways to exploit modern technology to minimise the amount of work people have to do. Many so-called "jobs" are unfulfilling, exhausting, at best useless and at worst harmful. Here in Brighton, half the population seems to be employed in brewing cafe lattes and making sandwiches for the other half. What's the point of that? The sensible approach would not be to force everyone into jobs, no matter what they end up doing, but to start with a realistic appraisal of what goods and services society actually needs and then divide up the work fairly. I know, I know it will never happen. But please everyone read "Useful work versus useless toil" by William Morris: http://www.marxists.org/archive/morris/works/1884/useful.htm.
Precisely. People dont seem to realise. What on Earth is so bloody great about having a job serving MacDonalds every day (supporting them and what they do)? Or the vast majority of jobs. I hate the way societys running, and i hate how its said to be so damn wonderful and if youre not buying into the system youre scum, yet if what youre contributing to life is a lifetime of resentment, toil, mindlessness, meaninglessness, hours upon wasted hours and helping major companies exploit the planet and others including you, that somehow makes you a fantastic person But yes, i know, oooh moneys important, blah The thing is im still not buying in and im not selling my soul. I have a dream and eventually ill be able to make a lot of money from that dream. Im also looking into getting weekend work just so we can survive in this place. But otherwise i live comfortably in the knowledge that im doing my bit by growing, loving myself and others, being creative, learning...and finally im now working on overcoming some trauma i suffered and i will then help others and the community, ive already applied for lots of volunteer work People have been fed the "theyre taking my money" bullshit so many times. Ffs, look at where the moneys really going. I cant get a single scrap of benefit. Methinks people who are out of work for a genuine reason is far less worrying than where all those taxes are REALLY going Im getting sidetracked. Basically i agree Kahlil Gibran said "All work is empty save when there is love"..."And if you cannot work with love but only with distate, it is better that you should leave your work" Ive tried full time minumum wage jobs being yelled at all day by corporate idiots. I worked with distaste Id rather study for a bit and do something of meaning Unfortunately i realise were not ready for revolution and needs must and all that. But sigh
Its not really about "A Job", it's about can one feed, clothe and shelter oneself or does one want someone to help oneself out. See my problem is why do people think they have a right to life, is the fact of existence enough, and why ?
I have a right to life because im damn well here. If i didnt feel i had a right to life id top myself now I can tell you the meaining of my existence does not involve the kinds of mindless activities i described above. Why would that explain an existence, or make you more worthy of anything? That was my point really, it often does not make someone more worthy yet its always perceived as doing so I have a right to food because i was born on a planet that bears food as fruit and other forms for the consumption of all creatures, theres no prejudice involved. Its hardly my fault its all been gathered up into the system it has done, and i wont be blackmailed into wasting my life away in nothingness to feed the greedy Also, as i said, you can do many many great things without it involving being paid in money. If basics like food must be seen as rewards to be earned, then surely this counts too Id also like to add that in my thoughts i also included those who are unable to do standard work for either mental/phsyical health reasons
I think people are pretty well aware of that. Nobody says you should toil away at some miserable dead end job forever. Who told you not to have any ambition or dreams? Who told you not to get any skills and not do something you car about and enjoy? Nobody!
People have a right to life.. they don't, however, have an entitlement to my money. If pople don't wanna work, fina dn dandy.. just don't pay em for it.
My point was referring to people who arent working as theyre studying, or doing volunteer work or recovering from mental illness or any number of things. These people are somehow perceived as being "less worthy" than someone who works in macdonalds, for example, and the way people talk makes it seem like youre either a mindless cog in the system or youre a loser, a scrounger and a good-for-nothing. While if you look at it from the angle i was coming from, it is actually often the people who are taking a bit of time out who are contributing far more positivity to the planet than those who go along with it all just for the money. That was my point. It ties in with why i cant stand the whole sweeping "if you dont want to work dont take my money blah blah bleh" shit which i cant stand, its junk people have been fed for generations, while as i said tax money infact goes to far, far more worrying places right now and in terms of money this issue should be right at the bottom of the pile (as ive said in other posts) Im not condoning the actions of those who scam the system, i cant stand it infact, but you have to remember there are genuine reasons and having a paying job does not make you a good person, any more worthy of food and shelter (as dappy brought up) in itself than the next person Ive seen both sides. I grew up in a village where unemployment was high and people DID just lie about all day, did drugs, and cheated the system, and i couldnt stand it. But that doesnt mean everyone on benefits is doing those things, and it doesnt cancel out those genuine cases whose need to financial support is far greater than the need to force lazy idiots into mindless jobs which will probably make them even bigger idiots. The needs of those in need to be fully protected are greatest
I agree entirely. I don't think anyone is saying lick my shoe for a living or to toil away at a dead end job forever. But there is a need for skill development and for those to do something they indeed care about and enjoy. Of course, there needs to be A benefit system revolution that benefits those claiming so that you can realistically stand a chance of getting employment. It is time for change, it is time for British people to start building up hope. For too long we have remained in the darkness of broken society. But these revolutionary changes may break the mould.
You guys totally missed my point. I didnt say anyone was saying what you say i was saying they were saying Phew
