I have sneaking suspicions that one of the reasons my dad can't get a job is because he has a beard. He worked for 30 years in the corporate world and was highly respected before the dot com company he worked for went bust. So for the past 3 years, he's been unemployed and trying to find another consulting job. People seem to like him fine on the phone, but when he comes in for an interview, he says he gets weird looks for his beard. Now my dad does not look like a hippy in any sense of the word. He just happens to have a beard and moustache that he's had ever since he was 16 or 17. I've never seen him shave it. His beard is really short and well kept, so it's not like he's walking in with a 3 foot long beard (which is great in it's own time and place, but not for a conservative business atmosphere). People are always going to judge you for something I guess.
Facial hair on dudes is manly, I think. I think you have to have the ability to look past the beard because for me it used to be like 'woah there, beardy!', but now I see the headyness of it all. Just do what YOU like as said before. Screw the squares, man. My boyfriend has dreamy hair....So I think it varies person to person. Nature over squareness, imo.
I got a lot of negetivity, yeah. I let it grow for about one and a half years without trimming it at all. My coworkers/boss, family, friends, man they all gave it to me. I notice since I cut it shorter (along with cutting my long hair) I don't get so much flack. Not that it was all negetive, lots of people said I looked like Jesus (one lady compared me to Moses) so that can't be bad...what better person to be compared to, eh? But I'm finding I like it better trimmed shorter. I may soon go back to just a goatee, I don't know. Probably will be easier to find a job that way.
I have a beard. I keep it trimmed and neat. Code: It seems the longer it is, the more slack I get. I don't like it long anymore. Women seem to hate the beard on me, or just not care. I am going for the long hair and trimmed beard look now. I want to be able to tie my hair in a pony tail. I guess most people just think I look better without a beard.
I"ve had a beard and mustach, for more years than I can remember. I shaved it off once, and felt like I was walking around with my pants down. Never shaved it off again! My wife loves it! I keep it clean and trimmed. Have never had any woman complain about it, in any way.
My dh has a beard, and has had facial hair of some sort or an other for most of our 28 year relationship. AFAIK, he has had few negative comments on it. His mother was like, "Yuck!" at first, but, shit, who cares? It's his face. I LIKE it, in fact, when he gets in a weird mood once in a while and shaves it, I can't wait for it to grow back. He usually wears it in a goatee with a mustache. I love it. I have never heard strangers say anything to him. He's pretty adorable, too. Most of the time. He has a good job, and I think he had at least the moustache when he was hired, which was almost 25 years ago.
