Anyone read it? A quintessential "hippy" book. It chronicles(mostly through psychadellicly inspired artwork) the transformation of Dr. Richard Alpert Phd into guru Baba Ram Dass in India. Alpert, a nuerotic, Jewish Harvard professor becomes friends with Timothy Leary, embarking on strange journeys into the world of LSD and marajuana. Using a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist mysticism, Alpert illustrates for the reader what goes on inside of a persons mind during an acid trip.

Actually, yes, I have read this. I had a friend recommend it and it blew my mind. Kind of crazy but that's the way I like it.

Ram Dass also wrote, "Compassion in Action", "Grist For The Mill", both about his experiences in India and about working to help people here in the U.S and elsewhere "The Only Dance There Is" about Hinduism, "Journey of Awakening", which is about learning to meditate. ''Paths To God Living The Bhagavad Gita", is one of his most recent books and is about how he interprets the Bhagavad Gita, which is one of the great holy books of Hinduism. He also wrote just a couple of years ago, "Still Here", about his life after having a stroke 5 or so years ago. He also has a whole bunch of tapes and cds out and he is really a trip to listen to I'm not exagerating hes funny and very very enlightening. Dr Wayne Dyer says Ram Dass is the greatest speaker he ever heard bar none. I use to think Dyer was pretty conservative until I started to listen to his tapes and he's really into Hinduism and other stuff I've found. If you get a chance listen to some Ram Dass tapes he's like one of the Godfathers of psychedelics and the meditation movement etc. lilylove if your near Mpls right off of lake and hennepin going south on hennepin two blocks from lake on the east side of the street theres an alternative medicine clinic called Pathways that dispences all kinds of free care to seriously ill folk free, and they have a tape cd library that probably has some of RDs stuff you could check out for free. I guess I got a little carried away but if it wasn't for Ram Dass I think I may have gone completely nuts long ago, he pretty much saved me and got me back on the hippie path and for that I will be forever in his debt.

I loved that book. The format alone was quite hip. That book made me want to seek things East. I did, and am glad.

I read the book a few years ago, I didn't get all that into. Most of my friends that read it thought it was better than I did.

i spent alot of time at last years gathering hanging out with him in a tipi (have a cuple pictures if you'd like) i'd usualy find him in the morning, & just hang out with him shooting the shit, untill all the people who were seeking him found out where he was hanging & started surrounding him.... it was very interesting to just be chillin with him talking about normal everyday stuff, & come back later when the crowds had surrounded him & hear him talking as if from a higher plane..people would be asking him the most complex questuions that you'd expect to take hours to answer & in a very quiet voice he'd come back with a simple answer that even a child would understand
after listening to him for just a few minutes you just get this feeling like..wow how could i not have seen this before

ram my brother i hope to hang by the fire with you again next year

My buddy went to one of his seminars a while back, and he said that when Ram came in he was looking at everyone with such love that they all started crying. It's like they couldn't help it.
