I used knotty boy soap and I tried not washing and the only thing to get the gross ewie stuff off of my scalp is the baking soda rinse and some finger scrubbing. I have on occasion dipped my finger into the baking soda and applied it to my hair/scalp and scrub for really greasy areas. Not much cuz the shit is strong, but it is good for getting it where you want it.
