your information is basically the same as what YouFreeMe posted. you say that a 44 year old woman has a 3% chance of having a baby with Down syndrome. youfreeme's table says that 44 years old women have a 1 in 40 chance.....which equals 2.5%....rounded up to 3%.

your source actually says older women have a WORSE chance than what youfreeme posted.

all the rest of what you said is anecdotal evidence....which doesn't really count as evidence.

Several things: I want to understand why you and YFM need/want to keep on about this...so as to cause worry and concern to Joel? To "warn" others that are considering getting pregnant later in life that they MAY have a less than perfect child...because without all of your information they couldn't figure that out for themselves? They might not be able to look up information and y'all need to bring it up several times so as to "help" them?

You couldn't let it go because it was on another page and others might not have to read through it again? You thought you were going to educate me on this?

There are OTHER factors than age, but of course that isn't the point here now is it? :)

Last but certainly not least...this word both of you have used - anecdotal...

I fail to see where what I said was anecdotal. I certainly did not intend for it to be "entertaining" nor funny. Granted what I stated was based on personal experience. However, personal experience is not automatically anecdotal. You DO know that an anecdote is "entertaining personal experience", right?

I guess I'm glad you both were entertained...

Perhaps we can all agree to disagree. I choose to interpret the facts one way and you choose to interpret them another.

I should not have said our information is immensely different...I should have said we choose to interpret the information in immensely different ways.

i'm "keeping on about this" because you are trying to refute facts.

there is not much room for interpretation of a 3% statistical chance. yes, there is a 97% chance of the opposite occurring, and good for you for looking on the bright side...but that is about as far as you can interpret it. other than that, it is simply data. you can't argue it.

and yes, the literal definition of the word anecdote is an amusing story, however, "anecdotal evidence" has a different meaning. (please forgive me for pointing this out, as i'm sure you could have looked it up yourself) ;)

but like i said in my earlier post - when or if to have children is of course a personal decision. i wasn't judging anyone or trying to persuade them to have children sooner.
just asking Ash (who i consider a friend) a question that pertained to the discussion.

    one moar DAY!

Congrats Scratcho! I haven't been around in a while. It was good to come here and see some good news. I hope everything goes well for them.

I have 10 more weeks until my little boy is due to arrive. I can't wait. I'm an old mom too. This is my first baby and I just turned 37.

Maybe you should start your own thread about this. This thread is about Joel and his family.

Oh, the sweetest little thing! Grampa got to hold her. She was fussing a little and I put my face close to hers and used a deep, quiet voice and she stopped fussing and listened!!

Nurse asked me if they had a name yet. I told her first name would be Heyyou and middle name would c'mere. Thanks all for sticking around and the well wishes.

My family said that I looked like a length of rope when I was born----couple feet long and a little over 6 lbs.

Ha ha - I've never heard a baby described that way.

    Congratulations, Grampa.

    She loves you already.
