It drives like an automatic but I can slide the "stick" one more click towards the driver's seat and it starts being a standard where I shift by moving the shifter foward for up or back for down.. I wonder if it would know to be in 4th gear if I did it at 70mph? Maybe I'll ask at the Subie dealer on Monday.
Its not really manual if theres no clutch, there are alot of automatic cars that do what you are talking about, nothing special.
Yeah. I really really really dislike automatics. They just DON'T drive how I like. It's a shame that sticks are becoming so uncommon. Like... really? grow up... If you can't operate a clutch, you shouldn't be operating a vehicle at highway speeds... or even over 25mph, for that matter. And a standard is just so much more comfortable and safe feeling to drive.
seems like most people over here prefer manual too; the car companies probably just don't want to make them because they can sell automatics for more.
But no matter what automatic transmission you drive, it makes your car have a boatlike coasting action, crappy control of the engene, crappy control of speed, and an in general crappy driving experiance.
Newer highly tuned automatic transmissions are about as good on fuel as a manual, and will last about as long. They will still be much more expensive to fix, won't provide as much power, and you'll still look like a sissy for driving one.
