Stinkfoot, have you ever been an editor?

It's not what you say, it's what you DON'T say... that counts. (if you can remember that game show...)

The header and lead-in are very important to get people to read the story. You can't possibly say everything in the title of a story, so you include the subject, but leave out enough so ppl want to read the story.

If the title is misleading, yet gets people to click and read more, then you've done your job. So long as the story explains everything, and the title itself is not a lie, nothing is wrong. Indeed, the title I chose is absolutely true, yet somewhat misleading only because one fact was left out, which was included in the story. That is the art of editing.

The title is the hook to grab the reader. You either get 'em or you don't. That's one good reason why I am so adamant that people put descriptive titles in their threads. They get more ppl to read the threads (if they're interesting) or not read if they're boring.

This thread is a perfect example of that. Thanks to the title, we got 61 responses and over 2,600 views, that's a 40 to 1 ratio (views to responses), whereas normal is about 10 to 1.

Thank you for clarifying. For a moment it sounded like you were discouraging discussion in favor of acknowledging it and then putting it aside.
Anyway, on what you've said: while it's going around and around in a circle, someone looking on it with fresh eyes (or even tired eyes that think they've seen it all) might just see it in a different light.

I just realized that I never did post my opinion on the subject itself... just people's reactions, so here goes.

I will admit that my initial response to any suicide is anger, but over the years, I have realized that it is not necessarily anger with the person, but anger that the disease has claimed another. I used to be depressed myself. If depression had defeated me the way it has people like the boy in this story, I wouldn't be here, and I want to be here, damn it! So yeah, it pisses me off when I hear about it!
Not everyone has had the chance to examine their feelings the way I have (I've got some free time, plus being introspective is a symptom of my social anxiety- no one to study but me, lol), so I can empathize with almost all sides of this argument and find it pretty difficult to judge anyone's opinion of it save those of the blatantly ignorant- basically the 'DO IT FAGGOT!' crowd.
I feel most badly for the crowd. The poor boy lost his life, and it's a shame that he couldn't be saved, but those poor people that had no idea what they were clapping for... I don't know how I would bounce back from that. I wonder if something happened to him that made him want to punish the crowd or if he was just doing it to shock them into coming to some conclusion...

I was wondering the same thing, although his suicide did seem premeditated. But I can think of several reasons that his suicide may have been a response to the audience. Perhaps he was booed, or they completely ignored his musical performance. No mention was made of how his music performance was received, before he killed himself.

Imagine if they had booed or ignored him, and then he killed himself in response, and they applauded thinking it was part of the act, then they realized they'd bullied him into it or something. That does sound a bit far-fetched, but you never know. We need a followup to this story.

Seriously, in that discontinuity of blame for being in the World, could He be aware of both causing the fact of the demise and being the caused Demise in itself, the led authoritative Responsible Agent.

You're right, he got away scot free!

If we switched around a few details of the story and made it about homicide instead of suicide, we could come up with a just and fair ending.

He would have been punished! He would have to pay for the blood on his hands, the effect on the families, and the the people who were traumatized for life because they were forced to witness it. He wouldn't be allowed to escape the consequences so easy.. we´d make him pay.. But how could we do it? What would be enough?

    oh!

    I know! :hurray:

    how about........

    The death penalty?

.....yeah. That'd show the bastard :afro:

I had a friend very close to me commit suicide. My feelings were of sadness, but primarily my overall feeling was of understanding. Deep understanding. This world is not designed to be tolerable for every person. To call suicide selfish seems weird to me. Like someone should keep themselves alive, while suffering, so that you can occasionally see them in their state of suffering? This society and culture has so many levels of fucked up simultaneously running, and the nature of certain peoples, combined with there circumstances of being, combined with how they've developed, there really is no choice for them

This is probably viewed as very fucked up by some people. But it bothers me when people commit suicide in private. I wish everyone who commit suicide did it in as public a display as possible. So that people involved in this culture would be aware of the type of structure they are living in. It is a structure that is set up in such a way to require a certain percentage of it's participants to commit suicide.

You'd think if someone was going to take their own life, they'd at least make some point or protest something. Since he didn't, it was indeed a selfish act. It's the opposite of someone giving their life for a cause or to save someone else.

So it does make you wonder the reason he did it, and makes it more likely he did it for selfish reasons, such as to get back at someone who done him wrong, like a lover or parent. But since he never stated why he was going to kill himself, a "teaching" moment was lost, and his death was apparently senseless.

Was he so selfish he didn't even consider the reaction the audience might have to their witnessing his suicide? Seems he was so wrapped up in himself, he didn't care, or as I said he didn't like their reaction to his music.

He probably just wanted to cause shock and awe. The way a person chooses to take their own life says a great deal about them and why they committed suicide.

For example, someone angry with a loved one or family will often not leave a note so as to punish those people and leave them forever wondering. Someone who is relatively unsure that they really want to go through with it will often try to overdose on drugs, pills, booze, etc. They don't want to commit to something as final as a slit wrist or a hanging. People who hang themselves are often the least morbid as they're not willing to mutilate their body, they just want off the ride as easily as possible.

The fact that this kid chose to stab himself repeatedly in the chest, let alone in front of others points to a person who was very angry with the world and had absolutely no real regard for life in general, he wanted to punish others. If he hadn't killed himself he likely would have gone on to abuse animals and take out his aggression out on others.

Can't see how it's selfish, honestly. If stuff like this what it takes for people - even a small crowd of people - to wake up and realize life isn't "peachy" and all is NOT well, then so be it. Not too far dissimilar from a monk setting himself on fire.

In this context, if it's not selfish then it is arrogant and condescending.

Who is he (or anyone) to say that the audience doesn't realize that life isn't peachy? How would he know if the girl in the front row had been raped. If the guy on the side lost his mom to cancer at an early age. If buddy in the back just lost his job/wife/family and his friend treated him to a nice night out to forget about it all...

The monk's protest however, was a solid and clear message. We all 'got it' and therefor it is impacting. This dude has just left us assuming and grasping at ways to comprehend the act.

Hell, maybe he just didn't like Mondays.

What's happening with the world? Honestly?!

This is horrible. This is not the first time I've read about a young person who takes his life with audience, people who are unknown about what's really happening. It's this a new trend or what?
The progress of the "young society" really scares me a lot.

    I can't see how either.
I don't think a suicidal individual can take responsible for his behavior nor his destructive actions in his life. He doesn't has the ability to refer to other people emotionally, at all. He is so depressed and he can therefor not think clear or even see the consequence of his action/actions.

    Suicide is a selfish act.
I have been suicidal on and off for over 11 years or so and the only reasons I have not followed fully through with any of my attempts is because of not wanting to hurt my family and I was able to receive support when needed here on the forums and I thank the people who convinced me to go to the ER.

But I can tell you in my experience when I fall into such a deep depressive state I start to think that I am a burden upon my family because they help me out financially, so I start to believe suicide will end that burden.

Many suicidal people feel as if they are in the way, not wanted or are burden upon others and believe suicide is not an act of selfishness but believe others will be better off without them.

If you want to see what I am talking about read some posts at www.suicideforum.com
