Noticed something about ADD - from Aristartle

ADD AINT a disorder , altho it can mean difficulties if u dont know how to handle them.
It means your mind is better at scanning and multitasking and "stepping up levels" eg for long / stressful /high risk /dangerous type tasks , than someone who hasnt got your neural architecture.

But it does mean people with this architecture get bored out of their mind quicker.
And yes that can mean it can be hard for them to concentrate on otherwise simple tasks.

The average "non ADD" person would find a world with 90 odd percent of people ADD
extremely hard to live in.Their brains would basically pack up and theyd live in a state of confusion and constant aggravation.

Many of the most talented / successful people in history had / or have ADD.
Dont see it as a disease , just something different .And used in the right way , better .

( BTW I supposedly have Attention Deficit "Disorder").

Oh and I had to go to the pub before finishing this post!:) lol

Anyway , so do you find A** ( my name for it) a pain , or a blessing?
How do you act differently now u know you neural networking is different to most others?

    Best wishes

Medication helps, thankfully. And talking to other people who have gone to university with ADD is a big help to me, since I'm trudging my way through it.

I also volunteered as an Academic Peer Guide at my university last year to help international and first year students out and I did get a chance to meet all kinds of people in different programs besides mine. So I recommend Jedi's suggestion, and I would suggest you volunteer anywhere Chris.

Enough with this "I'm worried that people think I'm ..." bullshit.

I don't see you really reaching out, and really making an effort to sift through the thousands of people at your campus. Good people are out doing things in the world. If you want to meet good people, the most logical and easiest way to do so is to go do something in the world yourself.

You're cutting yourself off and closing the doorway to certain opportunities before you give them any real chance because you're afraid to try.

Don't ever be afraid to try, Chris. Give yourself a place and space to be able to try the things that you can really be passionate about.

    Thanks Chris that's sweet! :)

DID is diassociative idenity disorder...what people usually call multiple personalities. I have a very mild case of it and luckily it's temporary. I don't have different people with different names or any of those weird things that people assume. I am just beyond the normal realm of moodiness and often cannot recall my behavior or bad events in my life. The DID stemmed from my post traumatic stress disorder. I am working hard to work through it though.

I don't have Asperger's but I do have severe ADHD, which is now on the low end of the autism spectrum as the same parts of the brain are affected. I have a lot of the same traits-I am very good at science, have a hard time allowing myself to get close to people, have to work hard to not only see my flaws but my assets as well. So I do understand what you are going through completley.

Also, I used to be a bit (ok alot hah :) ) heavier because I broke my arm and could not be active and I immediatley thought liposuction but it turns out some exercise and cutting out the sugar was enough to change my body. i am sure eating more protein and lifting some weights will solve a lot of your insecurities...plus girls find it cute when guys ask them to spot them.

I try to enjoy myself but it's hard sometimes because i can't always see myself the way other people can and I have a very hard time commiting, being close and being faithful in relationships. Like you I see a lot of things as black and white, there is very little grey.
    .

I find it a blessing. i think I am very intelligent but some other things bother me like I have difficulty with spelling and grammar. I don't think I would have as many friends or be as liked if I did not have adhd but on the other hand I think I would be a lot farther in school if I did not have the disorder.

Thats interesting Lynsey , Im very "black and white " with things and people .
Things , theyre either brilliant or rubbish .And people theyre either "truthworthy" or "twats"
And I find people puzzling , illogical or locked up in mundane , regimented and one dimensional things , alot of the time.
ie I often cant be bothered with "going through the ritual" of getting to know them.

Nowadays I treat interpersonal skills as almost a scientific study. That might sound weird but I find it really rewarding.

    I am viewed as ADD , or A** as I prefer! :)
I cant believe/ accept that ADD is treated viewed as a "disease" or like Autism tho.

My view is that nutrition and exercise are vital. Also that we can shape our lives to utilise our own mental wiring eg using whole mind techniques to learn etc so u dont get bored as easily etc.Or try doing 2 careers at once ( its not as daft as it might sound).
Ive always avoided medications , but thast just me.

Aristartle , u'd recommend Ritalin?Or do you have a variety of ways of dealing with A**?

    Best wishes all

Just read your 2nd post Lynsey.

I think my A** made me more academic and achievment orientated , but also much more cynical of people - and less interpersonal.

The exact opposite of your situation

Chris the good thing about college is that you can meet a lot of people your age in a small geographic space.
It can be sports , hobbies and whatever stuff.

Lots of people start a new place and dont settle in straightaway.
It can happen to popstars , football stars , businessmen , "cool kids" ANYONE.!
It doesnt mean youre a bellend!

I hated uni in my first year , 2nd and 3rd years were easy.
Just try a few different things.Itll work out in time.
If u find yourself watching television on Sat night when u wanna be out pulling girls , just learn a new skill - which'll set u up later in life.
You dont need to have everything come to u at once!:)

And "pulling beautiful girls" - the topic of this post is an art and science like most other things. There ARE answers all around u! ;)

adhd is very different. The hyperactivity causes me to be over outgoing. However my ptsd causes me to be very shy at times. As a teenager I could never stay home. I was always too bored. Even now I am on unemplyment which pays more than my bills but I miss the social aspect of working and am looking for a part-time job.

School wise I have A's in all of my science and psych classes and in most of my math classes but I am trying to pass spanish right now for the fourth or fifth time. It is the only thing pending for graduation. I just can't get into subjects I have no interest in. It is so hard for me.

What nutrition helps you with your A** ;) ?

I know exercise works well for me but I have yet to find any diet that helps. I def need help with my eating habits to stabelize my moods. In fact I used to be hypoglycemic because my eating habits were so poor. ANy suggestions as to what helps you in terms of food would be a great help to me :)

I see an adult ADD specialist each month to discuss medication dosages, and to pinpoint and really breakdown and get up close and personal to my thought patterns, personal behaviour and try to functionally manage my daily goals through dialogue with an experienced professional and trusted friend.

The specialist that I see has his office on campus, is the only Adult ADD doctor that could take me on as a patient in the city.

I fought hard to get the kind of help and resources available to me - because I'm passionate about making a difference within myself and I really do like to see that I have a fighting chance.

I take 3 different kinds of medications: the two lowest doses of ritalin available in Canada, and the lowest dose of Concerta available in Canada. I judge how much medication I need by judging my day, and having my meds available.

In the morning I'll take the lowest dose of ritalin. By mid afternoon, I may decide to take a higher dose of ritalin if I have to study in the evening for a test the next day. The Concerta that I take is a timed-released modified formula or ritalin, which has a lasting effect of 10 hours. So if I have a full day of school, I may take 1 concerta and be set for the day.

I and my specialist have a policy that less is best for someone like me. I don't take my meds on weekends usually, because I don't need them - unless I'm at work.

I have tons of different ways of dealing with my ADD - and I have finally felt as though I have a lot of control over my disorder. The medication helps tremendously. I'm less emotionally frustrated with myself all the time when I'm on my meds. I'm able to keep subtle differences and shifts in my personal attitude by the help that I needed to function and function well.

I'd recommend engaging in dialogue to someone - a professional. Someone with an MD who is currently informed with your disorder and helps treat the symptoms of your disorder as well as the disorder itself. Not all meds are right for each person.

I agree here! I was a speech and academic decatholon and track girl in high school...not the coolest sports for girls but I hated cheer so much I quit. It was a large school and people didn't really know me unless I had gone to middle school with them.

At my first college I was a crazy sorority girl and pretty much everyone on campus recognized me and I am still close friends with most of my sisters.

When i went to a public state college i did not join a sorority or any clubs, kept to myself and I really don't run into too many people I know. I went from being a big fish in a small pond to being a small fish in a giant pond. I was over college life and kinda dived into a career very early.

It totally depends on who you want to be and how you present yourself. I know when I go to grad school i am going to def join a grad student sorority and have a crazy time and live in a crazy fun city.

I use a lot of audio textbooks and visual aids to help me study, since ADD is considered a learning disability.

I also have a drawer in my desk that has "hand friendly objects" in it. I keep silly putty, bracelets or sewing projects that I'm working on, and anything that is fun to play with in your hands really (I have this cool orb thing). When I need a break from studying or need to do something (to have that background white noise effect) I pick something from the drawer. I have a stress ball, and sometimes I toss it around while I'm sitting at my desk and things like that.

I also have earplugs and an iPod - so I'm able to tune everyone out when I need to.

I agree with you on the meds. I take welbutrin for my adhd (it is an off label use) and my computer scores for adhd have gone from the 90th percentile down to the 30th showing that the medication has me down below the general population's adhd tendencies. Welbutrin/zyban has been a godsend.

    Lynsey ,

I see an A** brain as like a car which has been tuned up or been set up for nitro etc
Its under much more stress for its size because more is demanded of it.

The ADD brain is having much more work demanded from different compartments.
So if theres a nutritional deficiency , its more likely to pack up and say "fuck Im bored" or "fuck this is driving me mad" or "fuck Im off down the pub , I'll finish this post later".

I think it IS like Autism when the ADD person gets bored and has to read new things into a task , to stop switching off.

Anyway to asnswer your question re nutrtion , I would firstly say complex carbs , all the vits and minerals , and lots of water.Because I think an ADD brain naturally has a lower tolerance of a deficient diet.Fresh fruit and veg , not too much cooked or microwaved ( too much rapid heat), and ideally organic.
I havent really researched all this , just my feeling.

Ive heard from ADD people that they swear by omega oils and try and avoid the fats in pastry and pies etc - as they reckon they clog up neural transmission more.

I also reckon Educational Kineseology and Tai Chi could be godsends.
To me its all about striking a balance between being placid / or should I say "calm" , and stimulated across the brain sectors.

To me this means a whole new way of learning , and sometimes living even.

    Aristartle ,

    Thanks for your post too.
Good to see youre handling your situation and getting ahead.

I know Im a bit eccentric but I try and avoid as much as an aspirin :)
But if it works for you - then great - go for it! :)

    I honestly feel proud I have A**.
I honestly believe successful characters ( good and bad) like da Vinci , Edison , Hitler , Churchill , Mussolini , Trump , Branson etc etc all look like prime cases of A**.
I think theres loads of politicans ,businessmen , entertainers etc have all the classic "symptoms " of A**

Sure A** gave me some tough , horrible times ,but I know it makes me what I am.
If I took away these perceived "deficiencies" it would take away what Im most proud of.

Sure medication can be a godsend , but I dont think ADD people should forget the strengths their neural wiring gives them.

Many thanks for your posts both of you.
Hope we can exchange any useful info by PM and / or here:)
    Best wishes

PS this reminds me of X-men abit - remember when they found a "cure" :) LOL

Aristartle what did u mean about white noise?
Do you mean like you can feel answers to what youre doing but just need a break?

I know at Microsoft's Seattle HQ they started juggling little bean bags.
The idea was to stimulate the conscious mind , so the sub conscious could come out with answers.Similar thing to you with putty.

ps read up on educational kineseology- its a similar type thing- trying to use the whole brain etc in otherwise one-dimensional tasks.

I'm mildly amused that we hijacked a thread about "Attracting Beautiful Girls" into our own ADD confessional booth.

    Way to go team!

    I mean white noise.

Like how some people can't fall asleep without the sound of the radio, or they can't study without the sound of the TV in the background.

My mind sometimes really has to be in two places at once - so I listen to my audio textbooks while doing something repetitious like squeezing a stress ball. I'm focused on the listening, but I also have my monkey mind pre-occupied. Small trick that I find works well.

Re hijacking the thread , LOL , I know , sorry Chris :)

PS I think we ADD'ers should start planning to take over the world- like the ginger haired people did at the Holiday Inn on South Park :)

I put a TV in my office -felt I was being really lazy but I think it helps- its better than the net surfing habit I had before.

I actually have a white cat to stroke , when I work from my home office.
Remember Blofeld in the Bond films? And Doctor Evil in Austen Powers.
    Did they have ADD?

ADD people of the world unite.Blofeld's global domination was just a foretaste of all that awaits us.

    MU HA HAAAAAAAA!:)

( strokes white cat , and ponders whether he needs more medication :)
