countries i take neither pride nor shame. not sure i entirely understand the concept of either.

i take shame in a culture of inconsiderateness, regardless of belief or ideology or any of that.
shame is like fear and pain, its just there to help remind you not to mess things up.

pride, i don't know what that's there for at all. other then maybe to make you not feel bad or something.

really i'd prefer logic and consideration to either one. a country, that's like borrowed or second hand drama.
i'd be more happier if their were more odd little trains and people could build and live in odd little houses,
and if logic and consideration and even imagination were more dominant then anything to do with gender or hierarchy.

i just, pride and shame, are just, things i can live real happy without having anything to do with my life.
that's just one of those spectrums, like aquasition, that people are misled by and to pursue.

i just look around me and see what could be better and what could be worse, and what cultural values move the needle either way.

(i'm "proud" of the imaginary country in my head, which i really doubt there's any in real life on this planet that's anything very much like it. the country i live in isn't very much, and i really have no serious expectation that any other on this earth, if i were to live there for more then a couple of years, would feel very much like it either. i think it would take a world where people looked more like cats, and no one hated logic or consideration, or imagination, for me to feel like any country on it was really my natural home)

As an Italian I'm proud of Italian history and heritage, but frankly Italy being the birthplace of historical fascism pisses me big time.

In America - not proud. Definetly not proud...This country is collapsing all around me - seems like every facet of this country, be it our Health Care system, Infrastructure, policing, Education system, etc, are all majorly crumbling simultaneously. I fear the worst for America going forward - the division just keeps growing deeper and deeper, and with that division comes anger...

I agree. We are in a dangerous time. And recently, the dicks on Fox are saying "why back Ukraine---we should back Russia." Russia acts exactly the way those right wingers want this country to emulate--have an opponent? Jail em. Poison ém. Shoot em." They see what's coming and are helping to hurry it along right in line with the unwitting dumb of the trump cult and the useful, cowardly idiots of the legislature. They, of course, want to be on top with those who will rule. Far fetched? Just go on Fox and listen to KKKarlson, Hannity, Ingraham on any day / evening of the week . Their topics are ALWAYS denigrating / criticizing ---THE LEFT with lies, distortions. and complete bullshit. NEVER any credit for something the left is doing or attempting to do that is obviously helpful for the middle class / working citizens. I'd say--keep your powder dry--I am.

I'm not the slightest bit proud of my country the UK, I'm deeply ashamed of this countries part in the illegal and unjustifiable attack and occupation of Iraq all based on the lie's of WMDs in that country. And the current government are completely corrupt and undemocratic, at least North Korea, and China don't attempt to hide the fact that they aren't democracies, this country puts up the facade of democracy to the world, in the last 19 months they have used COVID-19 to unnecessarily and unjustifiably take freedoms, they gave the police extra powers to stop protests and demonstrations without a legitimate reason to do so. And now they have told social Care workers and NHS staff that they must have the COVID vaccination or lose their Jobs, which amounts to blackmail and an invasion of their human rights. This country claims that it's a free country, it is not and getting less free by the day.

Could'nt agree more with you, and what you've said is only a fraction of the lies & deceit this corrupt government is engaged in.

Was inspired by JFK to enlist in USMC. Knew within a month Vietnam was bullshit, even at 18. And yet I fought, saw brothers die and was physically wounded and emotionally scarred.
I’m patriotic, I love this nation for what it allegedly stands for. Americans have failed to be good citizens. They fail to vote, they let millionaires and billionaires bastardize the constitution and trample their rights, they fail to be informed about their government of for the people and by the people, they allow big business to poison their children and destroy their future, they tolerate racism, sexism, ageism and hatred for anyone different …..and yet I still love my country. I just hate what we’ve allowed it to become.

There is so much I could say about this EVIL regium but it would take forever to State all of their lies and corruption and sleaze and freedom taking. And to think they were elected with approximately 13 and a half million votes, that's just approximately 20 percent of the 67 million population, the other 80 percent either voted for other parties or didn't vote by choice or we're not eligible to vote. And with just 20 percent they get a majority of 80 which means they can pass any law's they want. We also have a completely unelected House of Lords, and a head of state that is also unelected. This country the UK is currently in the darkest and most sinister time in it's entire history.

Things that make me proud of my country (USA)
Americans love dogs. Regardless of politics, religion, skin, gender, people come together to help a dog in distress. That's really cool.

Things that make me ashamed of my country
    everything else

Pretty much. But I feel that way about almost every country. Not much makes me proud to be a human, except when humans show true selflessness by defending non-humans (interspecies altruism, as Darwin called it).

Don't grieve. Countries as such are not to blame, it's the politics, politicians and yes, the people who are still fast asleep !

Wow! This thread from 2011 was dormant for over 8 years, from May 2013 until it came back to life with a posting in June 2021.

I have two countries of citizenship and two passports, and I suppose I'm proud of them in the same way I'm proud of the hospital in which I was born or a house my family once lived in. They're personal details not largely of my own making.

If you're proud of your country, before that, are you proud of your planet, hemisphere, or continent? Milky Way Galaxy is number one, the best ever? After country, are you equally proud of your region, province or state? How about your county, township, or municipality? How about your wastewater reclamation district? Being proud of your wastewater reclamation district makes about as much sense as being proud of your country.

Sure, pride is a positive feeling, and there's nothing wrong with positivity, but let's be most proud of the children we've raised, businesses we've built, or things we actually personally and individually had something to do with.
