For the most part "Hippies" were a media creation of the 1960's. They were just a subset of the "Beat Generation" that goes back to the 1940's. The real people that inspired the term were pacifists and anti war protesters that got trapped in the anti establishment movement >
-Some will say that a drug infused philosophy ended up destroying them from the inside out. - I say bullshit to that-**
"Hippie" is more of an ideogly- a way of thinking and living- - nurtured properly will never die- it will evolve-

Not at all.. being a "hippie" is a way of living, a certain, yet open mind set.. and these people are found throughout the world, and will continue to do so, whether they are labeled as a 'hippie' or not

And the "Beat Generation" were a subset of the "Existentialist" and the "Transcendentalist" movements, which were subsets of some other bohemian movement before them. This that we call "Hippie" for that one period of time has always been there it's just a name put on it at one time. During the last 30 years or so I've heard numerous names (some derogatory) such as "Granola" or "Neo-hippie" put on people of the same type of ilk. Some of these kids had hippie parents and some just see it as a way to piss off their Upper Middle Class to Upper Class families. Kind of like Tommy Chong at the beginning of "Up in Smoke".

Hippies are not at all a thing of the past, By Now two more Generations from the sixties have cropped. Many of these generations subscribe to the things that makes a hippie a hippie. They may not be originals but uncorruptable Hippies they certainly are.

My first hand experience with the Occupy Movement is that it could hardly carry water for the hippie protest movements of the '60's.

They don't seem capable of locking into an effective issue that supports thier supposed cause of redistributing income in the USA. What the H does occupying a piece of public municipal property without a permit have to do with inequities in a capitalist system? Absolute minionism, the kind of thing a not-for-profit pro-bono lawyer would get you into.

The movement could have early in the game locked on to the "bank transfer day" concept, something that takes more work and would startle the establishment if it caught on with the enlightened rich.

Instead, they allowed themselves to appear rudderless and the Transfer movement makes sure you know it:

"While the Bank Transfer Day movement acknowledges the enthusiasm from Occupy Wall Street, the Bank Transfer Day movement was neither inspired by, derived from nor organized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the Bank Transfer Day movement does not endorse any activities conducted by Occupy Wall Street."

I voted yes because we changed the world in the 60s and early 70s. I don't see the following generations having that kind of impact. Hopefully the Occupy movement will prove me wrong.

The 60's anti-war movement was small and disorganized in the beginning but it matured as it grew. Given time Occupy could become massive and impossible to ignore. Wait until Springtime, I predict it will really take off.

    gotta point there, newo.

I still think they got it arse backward when they hang around in municipal parks instead of in front of a B of A ATM.

I guess that everything old in made new. is democracy old,or is it new?
is Arab spring new,or is it a old idea. will America fall, disapear into histroy
as a idea, that history will forget? will it return as a "new" nation, i suspect
we are a cycle. our times are important as memories. we remember the days
but they pass away, and we also pass away.
"hippies" are nothing more than a expresshion of ideas, certainly some overlooked by progress, and capitalism. for the sake of freedom i shall
continue to believe that hippies cannot dies, they'r simply recycled as
a new idealism ,and maybe each cycle moves us forward, and i hope to
    a better future.

I think that just by virtue of the fact that it is not the mainstream style, there has to be something about a person's nature that leads them in that direction and it's thus less likely to fade over time.

The question is, does it matter? The world is becoming more and more socially restrictive and capitalist worshiping and environmentally destructive... So does it make a difference if a bunch of hippies are running around in it?

the hippie movement: movement implies something that has an end.
revolution: implies perpetual movement. i,m going to consider myself part of a revolution

It's all evolving and hippie can be all along a spectrum. My recent journeys in forest gatherings as well as larger (and smaller) events and so on say clearly there are hippies in the world. Not many Fabulous Furry Freak Bros types left, though there are some.

Hippies are spread across age and other spectra now. Not as recognizable, except often to one another.

More "hippie-minded" people are needed in this world. We need to unite. :)
