cant people just be themselves without categorising
hippies were from the 60s so unless you were one then then it doesnt make sense if your one now

just be yourself nd dont worry what others think you are

and i do think drugs played an essential part in being a hippy...sorry just my opinion =)

I don't, the thing about drugs is the remove your inhibitions which helps, because hippies kind to break free of their inhibitions in order to seperate from "normal" society so they can pusue a better, peaceful society.

    Definition of hippy
A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles.

    Says nothing about drugs.
If you want to dive in to it further, the fact you don't do drugs would make you even more hippy. LOL

Anyways, if a hippy tells you that you have to do drugs to be a hippy, then they are not realy a hippy. If anyone else tries to tell you that then they do not know what a hippy is.

aren't words such as those determined to personal interpretation?
the word hippy means something different to different people
just like the word gay represented happy years ago.
i see hippy as being various things.
my basic view of a hippy is an easy going individual who listens to good music, loves to lounge, and trys to enjoy life as much as they can.

    another definition of hippie

"c.1965, Amer.Eng. (Haight-Ashbury slang), from earlier hippie, 1953, usually a disparaging variant of hipster (1941) "person who is keenly aware of the new and stylish," from hip "up-to-date" (see hip (adj.))."

pretty much hippie/hippy is an americanized word.
too lazy to say hipster so they shorten the speaking method to hippie...generally means the same thing...but hippie seems more of a term towards yesteryear.
    hipster

here is a funny video about hipsters...maybe some othe people here will appreciate it :p

drugs aren't something hippies need to do, it's just what most of them like to do. so no it's not a requiremnt.

absolutely NOT AT ALL. getting and being stoned never had a damd thing to do with what real hippies were all about. mellow, laid back and creative, yes, but not in any way dependent upon the recreational consumption of neurotropic substances.

real hippies started smoking pot, granted partially as a political statement of anarchist defiance, but primarily and even more, as a way to AVOID becoming the kind of dumbed down alcohaulics many saw their own parents as having become.

encouraging people to empair their own judgement is a mainstream stratigy to keep the gullable dumbed down and ignorant of vested manipulations which were thus enabled to usurp popular political proccessess. the very antithisis of what real hippidom was all about.

the drug thing and even the word hippie, were invented by the military/corporate media complex, to discredit intelligent, libral minded, politically active, mostly young, and or young thinking, people, who in fact and reality, held and still do, the moral high ground. something no fanatics of any stripe, least of all fanatics of the alcohaul pickled bussiness as usual status quo, have ever been nor will ever be, capable of.

anyone who believes getting or staying, stoned/enibriated/wasted, equals being a hippie, has been conned, lied to, and brainwashed.

i completely disagree with people saying that hippies were from the 60's.. first off I only use the term to discribe someone that is liberal, in tune with there world, and on a quest for enlightenment of some sort.. to be honest that discribes a lot of people... like for example... MOST PAGANS! lol. "hippy" is a mind set... its a life style choice and they are few and far between but i have met people that are born with this mentality... but for the most part people come to this life style choice thru the use of psychedelics and people who deny that are probably intentionally over looking the truth.. I was liberal before i started doing acid... but i wasnt a peace searcher... i didnt enjoy the world around me as much.. i didnt understand how everything is connected and i didnt care about making the world a better place or going out and trying to change things.. now im about 10 ft from full blown activist... im in the workings of planning a strike and protest at my school b/c they are treating us like slaves... trying to make more money off the students that already go there instead of actually trying to bring in new students... and deffinatley NOT respecting our contracts. Now i want to make a difference...
the MAJORITY OF HIPPIES IN THE 60'S WERE THE WAY THEY WERE B/C OF THE USE OF LSD... not all of them.. but most of them. which means that "hippies" can still be made thru the use of LSD.. ALSO you dont have to dress in hemp clothing and listen to pink floyd and have dreads to be a "hippy" i really think that all it takes is the mentality.. if you look at the 60's they didnt all look the same.. in fact they all varried greatly in attitude, dress, and likes but they all had that common love and generosity...
RAVERS ARE NOT FUCKING HIPPIES! I WANT TO MAKE THAT FUCKING CLEAR! 90% OF ALL RAVERS ARE JUST DRUG ADDICTS. I HAVE BEEN ACTIVE IN THE SEATTLE RAVE SCENE FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND I AM SICK AND FUCKING TIRED OF THAT COMPARISON. ravers are irrisponsible.. and as soon as they are sober they dont care who the fuck you are or what your about. they have no respect and distroy everything. including there own venues...
in seattle there are "ravers" and there are "psykids" or what ever you wanna call them... the people (like me) that only go to the psychedelic trance parties or DnB parties... i cant fucking stand kandi parties and all the 14 yearold drugged out jailbate running around. clumping ravers and hippies into the same catagory is like clumping punks and emo kids into the same catagory... Regular ravers only believe in Plur while there high on there stupid little almost plastic skittles. grrr...
I used to be a raver.. i remember what it was about.
Another thing... what is the difference between what is going on now in the US and what was going on in the 60's? No draft? thats about it. We are in the middle of a fucked up oppressive war and the only thing were missing is a chemical revolution like in the 60's OR SOME REAL FUCKING LEADERS! b/c we have no real activist leaders. i would love to get out and protest but no one does it any more. lol. they just bitch about everything thats wrong with the world on internet forums where no one cares... haha..

all an all.. no drugs are not a requirement.. but they obviously help. lol

I knew a hippy that was a priest, he did not do drugs. My most clear moments of 'hippyness' is when I have gone long bouts with no drugs and more meditation.
