Don't have time to respond in depth but:

I was taught a proficient knifeman within 20' stands a very, very good chance of taking out the gunman if the gunman isn't on his game.

True there was concern for the British but there was also concern our own government might also need to be kept in check somewhere down the Road.

Some Folks enjoy archery, bowling, others enjoy shooting.
    To each his own...

Everyone enjoys their own sport. And the gunman/knife study was done when they were drawing from the holster and not already drawn. And stebo here's over 1000 stories of self defense that you must have missed, many involving the elderly who without their home defense weapons, would have died. http://www.healylaw.com/self-def.htm

And I could post 2000 more where children have been killed needlessly in the name of sport or was it self protection or was it just plain killing for the thrill of it.

ya i was thinking about whether our own government may need to b kept in check... But really, how do you plan on doing that? Do you want to start a civil war or something? I don't think that there is going to be an armed uprising against the U.S. Government anytime soon. Because they'd throw your ass in Guantanamo bay and torture you first.

We've already been involved in one revolutionary war on our soil.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolutionary_War

It can be done again if need be...
The US armed forces would be defeated as were the redcoats.
The US armed forces would also be out numbered.
    Anyone understand guerrilla warfare?

Do you understand 'Civilians' taking out tanks (or planes) w/'military' weapons available on the 'open' market.

    Do you understand tactics?
    Do you understand numbers?
    Do you understand resolve?

Suppose we should still be a British colony, eh?

Sorry that link was by another poster.I'd post the 2000 except it'd be a huge waste of time seeings how you'd brush it off as the tooth fairy.Selfish people only see what suits their needs. If we had a revolution, what would we be fighting for?More violence?More of the same bullshit? The war with England was about business not freedom. As always the common man paid the price and got nothing in return.

Nope, I'm a proud member of the NRA. What I am anti is , anti illegal guns, ya know, the hot one's people get off the street to go kill innocent others with, the guns that I wish like * some orgs would get off their fat *s and say " enough is enough " and get the illegal guns off the streets and into the hands of responsible gun owners, like people who just want to protect their homes and loved ones and of course, hunters. Never been anti gun, just anti hate crimes!

In my country, it's illegal to shoot people full stop. The law states you can use reasonable force to defend your home, but murder is murder. Some people here want to overturn that law, which by implication means they want to use unreasonable force! And what determines if a gun owner is responsible? In Bowling for Columbine, Moore is able to get a gun just by opening up a bank account. That's crazy. I'm not saying guns should be banned, but this open access to them is ridiculous....

A way to show someone is responsible is to do a background check and see if the person has something on their record that is reason for them not to own a gun. And it may be a cliche line, but it doesn't change it from being true. And even with your stupid analogy with the nuke, it's still true. The president and friends decided the nuke should be dropped. Which ended up ending the war so...
